Immortal Separation Page 8

by Kim Iverson

“Mom,” Dean’s soft voice spoke as though she were unaware of Mason regarding her.

Lana turned around and became caught in the gaze that captured her so long ago. Pain swept through her. How can you look at me like that when the years have been so unkind? He gave her the smile that crinkled at the corners of his eyes. The years faded further away.

Only they did begin to fade. Mason stood and crunched the cigar under his foot. He moved over toward the store. With each step, the age slid off him. All that remained was the touch more grey in his hair, slight stubble. Otherwise he looked like the man she lost when Dean was a baby. Now she really felt inadequate.

Mason kept a close eye on her with every move he made. He raised his leg, pressed his foot against the wall of the store, and shoved. They began to drift. The house floated as silent as the wind. Her heart beat a frantic pace, then slowly settled down. She felt like her old self. And safe . . . with this man. As only he made her feel.

“Mom!” Megan gasped. Lana didn’t look at her. She remained stuck in the gaze of the man strolling her way.

Mason stopped in front of her. “As beautiful as I remember.”

Lana shook her head and lowered her gaze to the floor. “Not anymore.”

Mason’s large callused hands wrapped around her face, and raised it to look at him. “Not a day has passed. Not now that you’re here. I’m not making the same mistakes again.”

“Mom, you’re so pretty,” Megan whispered.

Lana’s attention swept over to her daughter. She shoved Mason away and ran over to one of the windows on the house. The years had disappeared. She sucked in a breath, then glanced at her hands. Not a grey hair in sight, no wrinkles, no age spots. Even her body felt renewed. Powerful once more.

  “I—I don’t understand. What happened?”

Dean answered for her with a laugh. “You bring out the best in each other.”

  They drifted in silence.
