I fell silent, my knees starting to hurt from the length of time I’d been on them. I brought the small jewellery box up and popped it open, holding it up between both hands. When I raised my eyes to Lyla’s again, she had tears streaming down her cheeks. Seeing her crying caused my heart to jolt hard before resuming its runaway pounding. I’d made her cry, which wasn’t quite the reaction I’d hoped for.
“Shay, please get off the floor.” She cried, her hands reaching for me, and with my stomach feeling like it was trying to tie itself into a knot, I pulled myself to my feet. I was almost too scared to look at her for fear of her rejecting me.
As soon as I was standing she pulled me forward and into her arms. Raising herself on her toes she pressed her face into my neck and sobbed, her hands clutching me, her hot breath scorching against my skin.
I held her, unsure why she was crying until she finally pulled back enough to look up at me with tear drenched eyes.
“Oh god Shay. I love you so damn much. You are what I’ve waited for my whole life. You have no idea how much you’ve shocked me proposing to me, but if this is what you truly want, then I can’t think of anything I’d want more than to become your wife.”
Her words spoken through her tears took a moment to register with me, but when they did, all my fears and panic lifted and I smiled, a huge relieved and happy smile.
With fingers shaking, I pulled the ring from the box and slipped it onto Lyla’s finger. It was a perfect fit, the single square cut diamond sparkling under the overhead lights.
“It’s beautiful Shay. I can’t believe it. I can’t believe you want to marry me.”
“Well believe it baby because I can’t wait to make you my wife.” I leaned down to kiss her.
Just as I started to deepen the kiss we heard a knock at the door and I straightened, my heart slamming against my ribs. Lyla had agreed to marry me and now we had to tell her family we were engaged.
“They’ll be happy for us.” Her voice penetrated my thoughts and when I turned to her, she was smiling up at me and I realised she’d somehow read my mind.
Louder knocking sounded through the apartment again and Lyla dragged me towards the door. “Come on, before they wake Rosa.” She said.
“Was it wise giving your brother an access key?” I asked, laughing when Lyla rolled her eyes at me.
“Sometimes I wonder but it was easier to have him let everyone in than be answering the intercom all the time.” She tilted her head towards the entryway of our apartment. “Come on, we’d better go and let them in.”
I followed her as she crossed the room to go and answer the door, my hand held tightly in hers. When we opened it together, her parents came in, followed by Leo, then Ava and Karen. We’d barely made it back to the living room when the ring on Lyla’s finger was spotted and everyone erupted. The women squealed with delight, their faces alight with brilliant smiles and the men were more conservative, congratulating us. Although Leo did give me a slap on the back before hugging his sister.
When the women crowded around to look at the ring I let my eyes drift over the people who filled our apartment. As I stared at them all, I realised for the first time in my life, I was truly part of a loving family. For the first time in 24 years, I was home.
