I straightened my posture and said, “From this moment on, I’ll be using a different name.”
Brenda visibly paled. Her lips parted, her eyes widened. She gave a subtle shake of her head.
It was time to yank on the thread I’d followed earlier that morning. “I will no longer be known as Dr. Barnes. From now on, I’m Katherine Eris.”
Agatha said, “You’re switching to your middle name?”
I glanced at Brenda, who sat as silently apoplectic as one might when not alone. “I’m not switching anything,” I snapped. “But call me Dr. Eris. I want all stationery to reflect this.”
As they muttered among themselves and Brenda looked anywhere but at me, I reminded myself of something Buddha said. “The worlds originate so that truth may come and dwell therein.”
I studied the face of each woman in turn.
Welcome to my truth.
And I’m just getting started.
