Sinful Intentions Page 34

His lids were barely open, but his eyes were alert as they focused on the little boy standing beside his bed. Anxious, Trevor clung tightly to his parents’ hands, reluctant to get closer to the man whose labored breathing interrupted the room’s silence. The old man looked into his eyes and the child was surprised to see recognition. He drew back, confused as to the reason why.

Nedra introduced Samuel Jamison to Trevor Johnson Reasoner. The man studied the child quietly as if memorizing every feature of his handsome face before he spoke.

“I’ll tell her that I saw you.” His voice belied the frailty of his condition.

Trevor looked to his parents for the meaning of his words. They appeared to be as confused as he was. Samuel’s eyes shifted to Nedra and Sin. He whispered.

“He’s safe now.” With that, he closed his eyes and as if summoned by some invisible force, the nurse hurried into the room. She dismissed them. Charles appeared and opened the doors. The visit was over.

Nedra and Sin left the room with their son. They had granted the request of a dying man. There were no regrets and no hard feelings. Their ordeal was over, and as Charles closed the door behind them, he and the nurse were present as Samuel Jamison uttered one last word before taking his final breath—“Jessica.”

Nedra, Sin and Trevor stepped from the Jamison mansion into the sunshine of a new day. Nedra squeezed her son’s hand.

“Are you okay?” She hoped that the short visit hadn’t frightened him.

He nodded. “Where are we going now?” His tone told them that there was only one place that he wanted to be.

Both Nedra and Sin knew the answer to this one as they answered simultaneously. “Home.”
