This book delves into the depths of a story of crime, passion, and the inner workings of a woman who is simply trying to find herself. Katerina Auclair is a young journalist who is looking for her big break, traveling to Moscow to pursue a story, but there she meets a mysterious stranger who leaves her curious. She follows his story down the rabbit hole, exploring as much of his life as she can get her hands on, until she finds that she too must play a role in his uncontrollable darkness. This book will captivate your attention, tantalize your need for mystery with the turn of every page, and with the first read you’ll realize just how complex these two characters’ lives truly are.
Chapter One: Dominik
It was nearly five o'clock in the morning when I finally managed to wipe the blood from my hands, watching as the warm water washed away any sign of what took place here tonight. I was hoping that I would make it through one day without having to take another life, but I had absolutely no choice this time around. The man laid dead in his bathtub with slit wrists as the water began to turn to an unsettling hue of pink. I wiped away any trace of my DNA, making sure that the crime scene was as perfect as possible. It’s such a shame that he didn’t follow through on his end of the bargain. I was supposed to be collecting what I was owed, not making a mess of things when I have men to do that for me, I thought, reminding myself that this was a personal affair. As much as I wanted to leave it in the hands of those I trusted the most, I wouldn’t be worthy of the respect I’d gained if I didn’t do some of the dirty work myself.
I glanced back at the unfortunate scene in the motel bathroom, knowing quite well that no one was going to miss that sorry excuse of a man. I was tired once I got back into my car, driving off just as the sun had begun to rise. I was longing for a bit of rest, a bite to eat, and someone to take my mind off of work for a little while. It was far too late for me to even consider the latter, and once I pulled back into my mansion, I knew I only had about four hours of sleep before I’d have to do this all over again. When I was just a little boy, I would watch my father leave the house at all hours, leaving me perpetually confused as to why he was never home to take care of me. My mother tried her best to pick up the slack, but she was much too occupied with her wealth to remember that she had sons. We had a big family, but somehow the sheer size of it never did fill the void that settled within me and made me thoroughly resentful.
I now knew the kind of struggle my father went through, because not a day went by where someone wasn’t trying to take away from me all that I’d worked so hard to preserve. I was one of the few that maintained a top spot in the crime world, alongside my brothers who all commanded different forms of operation. We all had our strengths and never shared our weaknesses, but as exciting as our lives may have appeared to some, it never failed to bore me from time to time. I tried to soften the blow with women, vodka and copious amounts of cold, hard cash but nothing seemed to ever last long enough. It was almost as if I’d completely forgotten what life was like before I started spending a portion of every day pointing my gun at someone that deserved it. I never softened up like my brothers did, like my father had at the very last chapter of his life. To me, killing another human being was business at its finest, and it left no lasting impression on my psyche. I did my job, I protected my family legacy, and I planned to live out the rest of my days being the most feared man in the country.
It wasn’t easy running businesses above ground, spending every day covering my tracks and reminding the world that I had some clean money to disguise the dirty, and blood money or not, it was always a pleasure to receive. I enjoyed the finer things in life, and somehow those who knew of what we did or how we operated always seemed to look the other way for fear of upsetting us. I wasn’t notorious for taking my anger out on those who were trying to uproot my life, but I always made sure to drive the message home before I collected what was rightfully mine.
Leaving the motel traceless was an art, because there were always people in the parking lot smoking a joint or trying to buy crack off of the dealer down the street. None of their witness statements would ever hold up in a court of law, but I didn’t want to take any chances. It felt good to finally be back in the confines of my own mansion, as a waft of fresh linen hit me, and I knew that the housekeepers were up attending to their duties. They greeted me kindly, not even noting the fact that my white button-up shirt had been stained pink and my face was splattered with the blood of yet another that didn’t understand the concept of returning what he borrowed.
“Good morning, Mr. Volkov. May I bring you anything?” asked my housekeeper, eager to assist me. She was quite young to be working in a place like this, but I was far too tired to even entertain the thought of taking her upstairs with me.
“I’d like an espresso, and the paper. You can bring it up to my room, Edna,” I said, tossing my jacket over my shoulder as I made my way upstairs.
From the moment I spotted the bed before me, I just wanted to lay there and waste away for the rest of the day, but I knew that would never be possible. I had business to attend to just as the clock would hit eleven, and a swanky party to attend later that evening. I hated high-profile events for the sheer fact that everyone always kept such a close eye on the elite, though it always made for a good selection of women that I might be able to convince to come home with me that night. I was looking forward to taking the edge off because the last loose end I had to wrap up was exceptionally messy, and I knew it wouldn’t be very long before I’d have to do it again.
I drifted off well into the morning, and just a few hours later I found my alarm going off, telling me that it was time to get back to reality. I went about my day as I always did, a hot shower, another espresso and catching up on the news. It was always quite the event to check the newspaper the following morning to make sure that whatever business I attended to didn’t make the front page. It was the silence that I relished the most, and I wanted nothing more than to make sure that remained a constant.
I headed down to my study, taking a seat in my executive leather chair as I started counting the cash from the last drug shipment we received. I counted it over a few times, realizing that we were ten thousand short. I blamed it on my sleepiness at first, trying to tell myself that there was absolutely no way something like this could’ve happened on my watch, but I knew that something was wrong. I picked up my burner phone, calling my right-hand man, the one who was supposed to make sure this all went off without a hitch.
“Hello, Alexei, I believe we have to chat. You were supposed to make sure that nothing
went wrong on the last run, and I’m ten thousand short. If you want to keep your head, I suggest you find out who’s been fucking with my money,” I warned, and I could hear him squirm on the other end of the phone.
“You got it, Boss,” he replied, hesitantly.
“I need to make sure this is all taken care of tonight, before my outing. When things like this happen, it makes me think I can’t leave you men to take care of business for me. I’d rather spend a day without having to put someone in the ground. Do you understand that, Alexei?”
“I do, Boss. I will make sure to find the cash.”
“You’re going to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again,” I said, hearing him gulp over the line.
I was tired of having to wallow in the fact that I had a band of utterly incompetent men. I just wanted to know that they were capable of handling things when I wasn’t around, because it would allow me to enjoy the life I’d worked so hard for, so much more. I wasn’t able to travel like I used to, I wasn’t able to get out and experience the world, because the minute I’d leave, someone would slip up. I suppose I’m just going to have to find a way to entertain myself in the confines of my own purview, I thought, smirking as I remembered that I still had the party to attend later that evening.
I called a car to be pulled into my driveway, greeting my chauffeur kindly as we took off to take me for a bit of shopping. I needed something clean for the evening, something that told all the women in the room I meant business. I got out to the street that was lined with the attire that I favored the most, heading inside a clearly-lit store that housed a few extraordinary suits. I was very picky when it came to the clothes I put on my back, because like everything involved in my line of work, each suit told a different story. I didn’t want to be known as the kind of guy who threw his money at things that didn’t help me keep up appearances, and it always made me feel better to purchase a new one, especially after the last one I wore was entirely soaked in blood.
“Hello, Mr. Volkov, is there anything that I can assist you with today?” asked the attractive, blonde sales associate. Her blue eyes lit up under the carefully-chosen warm lighting in the store. I wanted to take her back to my car and show her a good time, but I also wanted to be on my best behavior for the pickings I’d receive later that evening.
“Hello, yes, I’m looking for a suit. Something for this event that I’m attending later this evening. I’m usually here much earlier in the week but I got a bit caught up with work. Something fitted with a lapel collar,” I suggested as she scrambled to start picking things off of the rack.
“I have a lovely graphite suit that I think would be an incredible fit for you,” she said, and I grabbed ahold of the suit in her hands, thinking that the woman was very good at her job.
“Well, I might need a little help trying it on,” I said, as she opened a dressing room for me.
I gazed into those big beautiful blue eyes of hers once again, trying to remember why I was even bothering trying to hold off in the first place. She was the kind of woman who would capture my attention any day of the week, and I needed a bit of a pick-me-up if I was going to spend the rest of my evening chatting with those who claimed to have much more money than I did.
I inched closer to her, reading her body as her eyes lowered to my lips. I lifted her chin as she gave in, and I pressed my lips against hers, feeling my body tense up with desire. I pinned her up against the wall of the dressing room, hiking up her skirt as I felt for the panties she most certainly wasn’t wearing. I let out a small chuckle, lifting her legs around my waist as I was about to give her the ride she’d been looking for all day.
She was panting heavily, as a small giggle left her pursed lips as I ran my fingertips along the smooth skin of her leg. I could tell that she wanted a bit of extra attention, that she wanted her sense of control to be stripped from her, much like that perfect little blouse she was wearing. I was in the mood for a distraction, and I was going to make sure she received every bit of attention she longed for. I reached over to the little ottoman in the dressing room, grabbing hold of a tie she had picked out especially for me. I wrapped them around her wrists, tying her to the gold clothing rod.
“I can’t have you going anywhere until I’m done with you,” I said to her, watching as her skin turned a blushing shade of pink, just like that lovely tight pussy of hers. I let my fingers glide up her thigh, parting her pussy lips as I let them sink into her opening. I listened to her moan, knowing that if I didn’t shut her up soon, she was going to cause a scene. I lifted the end of the tie and stuffed it into her mouth, giving her something to bite down on as I thrust a fingers deeper inside of her, feeling her wetness coat them, preparing her for my hard dick.
“Spread your legs,” I instructed, and she obeyed. Her legs were shaking, unable to stand in those expensive black patent heels of hers. I was quite happy that she was so compliant, because I really wasn’t in the mood to have to convince a beautiful woman that this would be worth her time.
I unbuckled my pants, lowering my boxers as I took my hard, throbbing dick into my hands. I reached for her hand, letting her hands feel how hard I was for her, before I slapped it away and let her legs wrap around me again, sliding inside of her wet, plump pussy. She couldn’t move, as her body followed the rhythm of my thrusts, as I held her steady so I could pump her full of a job well done. I could hear her little whimpers, her eyes rolling to the back of her head, and I could tell she had never experienced anything quite like this before.
“Tell me you fucking love it,” I said.
I heard her try to murmur the words, as the front of the tie in her mouth finally fell.
“Tell me you fucking love it or I’m going to be forced to stop,” I said in her ear she continued to lose her mind.
“I-I fu-fucking love it,” she said, as her moans grew louder and I stopped them in their tracks with a passionate kiss. I slipped my swollen dick back inside of her as she began to squirm, her body ready for the biggest orgasm she’d ever had. I was just about to finish as I slipped my dick out, letting her hands down from the clothing rod so I could tie them behind her back. I lowered her down to her knees as she took my throbbing shaft into her mouth, and I fucked her face.
I stared at us both in the perfect dressing room mirror, her body lit by the warm iridescence that’s designed to make you look your best, as she brought me closer to the finish line. I laid her down on her back, teasing her with my tongue before I reentered her. Her entire body shook beneath me, and I finally let out my load.
“That was amazing,” she said, barely able to get the words out.
“I’m glad you enjoyed yourself. Now, about that suit,” I said, as she rushed to get dressed so she could finish my transaction.
She boxed my suit, tying a neat little bow on the handles of the shopping bag before handing it back to me, positively disheveled. I smiled at her, about to leave the store before she stopped me.
“Will I see you again?” she asked, and at that moment I realized that we were both most certainly not on the same page.
“We shall see. I may need another suit in the future,” I said to her, giving her that little bit of false hope that would help to soften the blow.
I felt rather satisfied heading back home to change for the party, but the moment I reentered my front door, I saw Alexei sitting in the foyer waiting for me to return. I knew that whatever was going to come out of his mouth was going to make me angry, and I thought it best to pour us both a drink before we even began that conversation. I ushered him into the living room, heading over to my wet bar to pour us both a glass of whiskey.
“I take it that you haven’t located my money,” I said rather calmly.
“I’ve been trying to figure out how that much cash could’ve gotten misplaced after everything went down clean. I’ve been looking into the men who were on the job and they all checked out. Whoever did this to you, had nothing to do with the actual job, but I have a feeling that yo
u may have eyes on you, Boss,” he said, and that thought alone began to worry me.
“We always have eyes on us, Alexei. What makes this time any different?”
“I know that you have a lot of enemies, but something about this one rubs me the wrong way. Whoever had the audacity to take that amount of cash out from under you must be planning something bigger.”
“Keep an eye out. If you see anything suspicious, alert me immediately. This is not something I have any interest in dealing with tonight, but we will find the fucker that did this, and we will put him in the ground,” I stated, and Alexei nodded at me, taking his leave so I could get ready for the party.
With all that is happening right now, it would be wise to stay put and not attract any attention to myself, but I’ll be damned if I ever allow myself to live in fear. I’m one of the most powerful men in the country for a reason, and I’m just going to have to sneak a bit of extra protection into that highly secure banquet to make sure that no one can get a shot at me if they choose to disrupt my evening. I’m going to enjoy the festivities one way or another, and no one is going to stand in my way.
Chapter Two: Katerina
My life has been lacking a great deal of excitement as of late, and as much as I want to believe that I’m going to happen upon the story of a lifetime sitting around holed up in my studio apartment, I know that will never be the case. I need to get out there and see the world, come back with the kind of story that would rock the media. I just want to see my name in the byline of a story that’s worth telling, and I know that if I want it this badly, I’m going to have to go out and find it myself.
