“Safe place? What does that mean?”

“They bring girls there. Protect them. Drug counseling and sex abuse stuff. Help them find jobs, or get their kids back out of foster care. It’s a woman’s shelter.”

Carlo glanced to the building and sobered. His drunken rage ease. “A safe place?” he repeated.

“Yeah. Fuck them. They still whores!”

Carlo turned the gun on the man and reached out of the car to grab him by his dirty thin throat. “Say it again.”

“Hey, man? What the hell is wrong with you?”

“Get the fuck away from here! Don’t ever come back!” He shoved him and the man fell back on his ass. The homeless jumped to his feet and ran from the car. Carlo tossed his gun over to his seat. He stared at the house. Shae lived in a shelter. It made no sense to him. And then it dawned on him, he never asked her where she was going or why. He only asked why she didn’t want him. Was she hiding from him? Scared of him? Did he force her to do this? After last night it would make sense. But before then, what had he done to drive her here?

A bus drove up into the driveway. The door to the house opened. Shae came out with two other women. Carlo could barely see. He opened his car door and got out. Young girls got off the bus. Some of them with bags or backpacks. None of them looked older than sixteen. Shae and the two other women greeted the young girls. Shae hugged and kissed two of the girls who kept their heads down. They didn’t seem trusting of the hospitality. Shae ushered the girls up the steps. And then one of the women saw Carlo. She stopped Shae who turned and looked back at him.

Carlo stared at her with tears in his eyes. He expected Shae to run. After what he said, how he behaved he deserved it. Instead, Shae gave him a smile. After the things he said to her she smiled for him. She blew him a kiss and then turned and went inside. Whenever Shae blew him a kiss it was a promise that everything would be alright. That he’d see her again. Would he? Carlo turned away. He wiped the tears from his eyes. He got inside the car and cried, he didn’t seem to be able to stop. An emotion he never felt as deeply before, washed over him in continuous waves. It was truly the first time his heart was broken. He didn’t want to go, but he knew he had to. This was for Shae. And if he loved her he would let her go. He swore he would never cry again when he drove away. And the longer he drove, the more he realized he’d miss the emotion he’d never allow himself to feel. Some feelings were better left unexplored.

It was time for him to go home.

  About the Author

Sienna Mynx was born in the beautiful city of Miami, Florida in 1971. She began writing at the early age of eight. The oldest of two children with a schoolteacher for a mother, she was taught the power of words and found countless adventures between the pages of a book. While other children her age shared an interest in music, sports, or even Girl Scouts, Sienna’s interests never varied. Reading was her passion.

By the age of 13, she created a private collection of drawings and short stories based on heroines she could identify with, but who lived in imaginative worlds far removed from her suburban upbringing. She’d share them with anyone who cared to read.

As a woman she adapted to the changes in her life by journaling and continue to explore her writing. Also an avid reader of romantic fiction and lover of television soap operas, Sienna adapted two distinct writing persona’s. T.A. Ford who is now a published author of sensual romance, and Sienna Mynx who explores the darker side of romance across genres. Currently Sienna has published over thirty multicultural romances total.

Sienna lives in southern Georgia and is the proud aunt of three. She is employed as a technologist, and enjoys traveling, writing, and blogging.
