Descent: A Trenton Investigations Novella

Danger, Will Robinson. The last thing I needed was to get involved with a prosecutor. Demons don’t play around. I didn’t have a diplomatic bone in my body. No one had ever taught me how to play nice.
“Who is taking the fall for Leab?”
“He knew the risks coming here. Probably should have avoided attracting the attention of sentinels.”
He had covered for me.
I didn’t understand what game he was playing. If he were to be believed, no one would be coming after me. I was safe.
Relatively.
But now I owed him. And when demons deal in debts, us cambions never win.
“I think our business is concluded.” The sooner I could wash my hands of him, the more likely I’ll see my next birthday. Why then did the thought of him really leaving make me feel empty?
“You haven’t gotten your bonus yet.”
Involuntarily my eyes raked down his expensively clothed body.
He chuckled and reached into his breast pocket. He chucked a wad of folded bills in my direction.
I picked it up. I didn’t count it, but it was heavy.
“There’s more where that came from.”
“And what does the new head prosecutor of Sheol want with me?”
He didn’t correct my assumption. All of this drama had been his way of climbing the ladder.
“I’m a demon with problems, Miss Trenton. I’m sure I’ll be calling you often.”
I sighed. I had the feeling I wasn’t going to be getting rid of him so soon. I balanced the cash in my hand, enjoying the feel of the weight. I could get used to this.
“If we’re going to be so friendly, you may as well call me Lex.”
Another genuine smile appeared on his lips. “Lex, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
Had he just quoted Casablanca? I furrowed my brow. I didn’t understand this demon at all.
He chuckled. “I have a soft spot for mortal movies.”
“Kinda hard to watch in Sheol, you know with no electricity.”
“I spend most my time here.” He looked down at his fingers and started picking at his cuticles. “Guess that will be changing now.”
He looked back up, his green eyes glowing. “Unless I have a good reason to visit.”
I crossed my arms over my chest and tried to look bored. “I’m not interested in games.”
“Neither am I.”
My mind went to Wes, and my heart gave a familiar twang. Bastard. They say the best way over someone was under someone else.
“I’m partial to Italian,” I said.
He smiled his wicked little smile, and I knew I was careening head-first into trouble.
I didn’t care.
What was the worst thing that could happen?
