The Sun Angel Page 22

Three men stood in the room, blocking the door.

“Who are you?” Jenna stepped back towards the bathroom.

“We have a message for you,” one said.

The three of them had on suits and wore black sunglasses, but the one who spoke looked familiar.

“I know you!” Jenna said pointing to him.

He smiled, “We met a while ago, yes.”

“What did you do to me?” Anger was replacing fear.

“I did what I was ordered to,” he shrugged.

“What memory did you try to erase?”

“I can’t tell you,” he opened his arms, and Jenna noticed he was missing a hand. “We’re not here to talk about a memory. We’re here to discuss your plans.”

“What do my plans have to do with you?”

He laughed a dark laugh, “Everything, Bright One.”

  “Like?”

“You promised us something a long time ago, and we’ve come to collect.”

“Whatever it is, you’re not getting it,” Jenna said defiantly.

  All three began to laugh.

“What do you think you can do to stop us?”

The three Angels moved before Jenna could even blink. They had her on the ground as the taller one stood above her with his sword drawn. Her eyes widened in fear knowing they were going to kill her.

The blade moved in slow motion as it drew nearer to her heart. She knew at any moment she’d be dead. Will’s face flashed before her eyes, and all she could think was why she ever left him.

The door burst open and Jenna screamed as a loud crack filled the air and the blade pierced her skin. Pain filled her left side and her vision clouded, but instead of blacking out, she remained conscious. Jenna knew she was hallucinating as Will ran into the room throwing ice from his hands at the Angels holding her down. She imagined she saw Will ram his sword into an Angel’s chest, then she passed out.

Will hadn’t felt such anger as he watched Arlo stab Jenna. The ice he threw made Arlo miss her heart, but still he got her, which infuriated him.

“Will!” Arlo hissed and disappeared leaving behind the other two dead Angels.

“Jenna!” Will crouched next to her to examine her wound. “Wake up, Angel.”

Slowly her eyes blinked opened and she looked confused.

“You’re not real,” she gasped clutching her shoulder.

“Move your hand,” Will ignored her, “I need to heal you.”

“Are you sure you can do it, mate?” James asked behind him, his sword still out.

Emanuel stood guard by the door.

Will looked up at James and shook his head. He wanted to try, but he couldn’t let himself get carried away like the last time he tried healing her.

James sighed, “It’s the exact same thing as healing me. Go on, try it.”

He looked back down at her wound-- it was glowing and becoming brighter with each pulse. Taking a deep steadying breath, Will placed his hand on her shoulder. She winced and grabbed his hand.

“I’m so sorry,” she said through clenched teeth. “I should’ve never left.”

“Shut up,” he grunted as he tried focusing on his task.

“When I wake up, I promise to come find you,” Jenna continued.

  “What?”

“Will she’s been stabbed by an Angel’s sword,” James said, “it’s causing delirium. You need to heal her before the power kills her.”

Concentrating, Will let his magic flow from his hand to her wound, making sure not to give Jenna too much. She moaned and her eyes rolled back.

  “James!” Will gasped.

“It’s okay,” James squatted down next to him. “You’re healing her.”

Will wasn’t sure until he felt the power of the Angel’s blade seeping into his hand. He wanted to pull his hand away but kept it on Jenna’s shoulder. His hand lit up, and he could see the power spreading in his blood stream making its course through his body.

He doubled over in pain as his body fought the power. He felt engulfed in flames making him remember what it was like when Jenna touched him all those years ago. He knew it was Silas’s power that caused this kind of pain.

Before James or anyone else could do anything, the pain stopped and he was left on his hands and knees, panting from exhaustion.

“You need to lay down, sir,” Emanuel said coming over to Will.

“Leave me alone,” he muttered as he checked on Jenna.

The wound had healed and when he looked to her face her gold eyes were open wide with shock. Will even saw pain and hurt in them. Immediately he wanted to yell at her and hold her at the same time, but he did neither.

“What were you thinking?” he said in a low dangerous voice. He didn’t trust himself to speak any louder.

“I…I’m…I am so sorry, Will!” she stuttered.

Tears filled her eyes, and Will felt bad for being mad at her; however, the little fool had really scared him.

“Why did you leave?” he kept his voice low and emotionless.

Jenna sniffled, “I overheard some Angels talking about how you’re going to kill me.”

“James, Emanuel,” Will continued to watch Jenna, “leave us, and if you see the Guardian, capture her and make sure she doesn’t take off.”

“Yes, sir,” Emanuel ducked out of the room.

“Will,” James warned, “don’t hurt her.”

Pulling his hard gaze from Jenna’s, he turned and stared at James who shook his head and left the room.

“Why didn’t you talk to me about this?” Will asked.

“I was too scared,” Jenna whispered watching her hands pick at her jeans.

Will sighed, “I thought we already discussed this.”

  Jenna remained silent.

“Jenna, I’m not going to kill you.”

Jenna glanced up at him, and he could see the doubt on her face.

“How do I know that for sure?” she asked him.

“I’m guessing you and I overheard two different conversations,” he sighed heavily. “I overheard the two speaking of me and the Queen. By the way, it was an angel with a wraith.”

“You don’t mean…?” Jenna shivered. She’d read about wraiths in her books and if they were anything like her books then they were bad news.

“I don’t know why she was with him, but it’s definitely not a good sign. Wraiths hate angels, we’re their ultimate target. They eat souls and ours are far superior to humans, but we’re hard to catch.”

“I overheard their, your plans,” Jenna cut in, “about how the Queen asked you to kill me so you could take my Sun.”

Will was shaking his head, “You’re right. The Queen did ask me to kill you, but that was a long time ago, back when I turned you mortal.”

“They said you thought turning me mortal would get you the Sun.”

“I did then, but glad it didn’t. Listen, Angel, you and I are on the same side now,” Will took a deep breath and ran his hands through his hair. “The Queen is after us both.”

  “What?” Jenna gasped.

“She wants us both dead, not just you.”

  “Why you?”

Will shrugged, “I’m guessing it’s because she thinks I’m unstable.”

“How are you unstable? Aside from being a vicious killer,” Jenna glanced at the two dead Angels in the room. They were already beginning to fade.

Will laughed, “I’m not a vicious killer.”

  “Look next to you, Will.”

He looked then laughed again, “Okay, so you got me there, but I only kill the ones who deserve it.”

“Like that makes it any better,” she muttered as she continued to pick at her jeans.

He shrugged not really caring. They sat in silence for a moment before Jenna spoke up.

“Why would the Queen want you dead just because she thinks you’re unstable?”

Will took a deep breath and let it out slowly, “I guess there’s something you should know abou
t me.”

  “What?” Jenna asked guarded.

  “I’m supposed to be King.”

  “What?” she asked now surprised.

“You see the Moon Queen is my mother,” he explained.

“Why wouldn’t you tell me this sooner?” Jenna whispered.

He shrugged, “I didn’t think it mattered.”

“Didn’t matter?” she choked. “How can you betray your own mother for just some girl?”

“You’re not just some girl, Angel.”

  “Yes, I am!”

Will shook his head and sat back, leaning against the bed, “You are my betrothed, not just some girl.”

Jenna blushed and changed the subject, “And your mother would kill you just for the crown?”

He chuckled, “I told you, power does things to people.”

“But her own son?” Jenna asked incredulous. “What’s going to happen then?”

  “With me?”

  She nodded.

“I don’t know, I guess I’ll be going rogue,” he now grinned. “I rather like that idea.”

  “You can’t run forever, Will.”

He liked the sound of his name on her lips and sighed, “I know.”

“So what are we going to do about the Queen?” Jenna pushed.

“Let me worry about that, Angel,” Will smiled and got up. Holding out his hand he helped Jenna up. They were so close Will wanted to lean down and kiss her. He stepped away fighting the urge to hold her he would not let her ruin him again. “Let’s go.”

  “Where?”

“To get your powers back,” Will called over his shoulder as he headed for the door.

James opened it the exact moment Will stepped up to the door.

“Whoa, sorry there, mate,” James said then moved to the side. “We have the Guardian.”

“Bring her in,” Will ordered as a dark look crossed over his face. He hated Lena even more now and wanted to snap her neck for taking Jenna away.

Emanuel marched in holding a kicking and cursing Lena. Quickly he dumped her in a chair stood next to her, grabbing her shoulder and forcing her back down when she tried standing.

“Thank you, Emanuel,” Will nodded to the Orc before addressing Lena. “Did you actually think you’d get away?”

She glared and refused to answer.

“You’re hiding something,” Will leaned over her.

“Go to Hell, Dark One!” Lena spat.

“Lena!” Jenna scolded. “That’s not nice!”

“I don’t care anymore, Jenna! He’s going to try killing you, I know it!”

Will pulled away and backhanded her across the face. She grunted and then began laughing.

“Are you going to kill me, Raven?” she looked up, her mouth full of blood and dripping down her chin.

“Will, stop!” Jenna jumped between them and grabbed his arm.

“Get out of the way, Jenna,” he glared down at her.

  “I said stop!”

Slowly Will lowered his hand, “You’re lucky Jenna’s here or else, yes, I would kill you.”

“You’ve already tried that once,” Lena smirked. “Didn’t work, did it?”

“Shut up both of you!” Jenna snapped having enough. “Just shut up!”

Every one stopped and stared at her. Jenna was breathing heavily, her hands balled up into fists.

“What do we do, Bright One?” Emanuel was the first to speak.

Jenna looked at him for the first time and her mouth fell open in surprise.

Emanuel bowed his head, looking away, “I’m sorry I am so hideous to look upon.”

“No! It’s not that!” Jenna rushed over immediately feeling awful for her staring. “I’m so sorry! I was just shocked.”

He nodded, “I am a beast.”

“No,” she said more gently, laying her hand on his arm.

He looked at her hand before bring his eyes up to meet hers.

“You’re huge,” she smiled, “not a beast.”

Will and James laughed as Lena muttered, “That’s an understatement.”

Emanuel gave her a small smile, “Thank you, Sun Angel.”

  “Please call me Jenna.”

  “Jenna,” he corrected himself.

“Oh yeah, so you listen to her!” Will threw his hand up in frustration.

Emanuel’s sharp eyes snapped up to Will, “She told me what I could call her, sir. You never did.”

“Fine, then call me Will, oh you great fierce Orc!” He barked.

“Are you angry, master?” Emanuel fell to his knees.

“Get up, giant!” Will rolled his eyes. “It’s called sarcasm.”

  “Sarcasm?”

“A joke, mate,” James muttered to him.

“Oh,” Emanuel looked down. “I have much to learn about this place.”

“And we’ll help you,” Jenna smiled at him.

His eyes brightened, “You are much fairer than before, Jenna.”

  “I hear that a lot.”

“So what’s the plan?” James asked rocking back and forth.

“We leave,” Jenna grabbed her bag from the table. “Now.”

“Yes, ma’am,” James nodded and headed out the door.

  “Emanuel,” Will stopped the Orc.

  “Yes?”

“Your new job is to keep watch of the Guardian.”

He nodded and reached down hauling Lena up to her feet.

“Hey!” she complained. “Jenna, are you going to stand for this?”

“I’m sorry, Lena,” Jenna grimaced at her friend. “Just go with it; it’ll put Will in a better mood.”

“Whatever,” Lena glared at Jenna as she let Emanuel pull her to the door.

“Oh and Emanuel,” Will called out. “Don’t let her out of your sight.”

“Got it,” he ducked out of the room.

Will made his way to the door but was stopped by Jenna. She laid her hand on his chest causing him to pause in surprise.

“What’s this all about with Lena?” Jenna half whispered.

He looked down at her, deciding to tell her the truth, “I don’t trust her.”

  “Why?”

  “She took you away, Angel.”

“That was my choice, Will,” Jenna confessed.

“And I’m sure it wasn’t hard to convince her to go,” Will’s voice sharpened. He was still upset at Jenna for leaving.

She flinched at the harshness in his voice.

“Let’s go,” Will stepped around her and walked out the door to where the others stood waiting.

“Are we flying, mate?” James asked.

Will nodded, “I’ll take Jenna, and you’ll take the Guardian.”

“What?” Lena stepped back. “I hate flying.”

“I don’t care,” Will shrugged before turning to Emanuel, “Can you follow us in the skies?”

“I can keep up on ground,” he nodded.

“Good,” Will looked pleased. “Do you remember the coordinates I told you about earlier?”

  “Yes.”

“If you lose us then go there.”

  “Yes, Master Will,” he bowed.

“It’s just Will, not Master- oh forget it!” Will flustered. “Let’s go.”

Stepping slowly up to Jenna he held out his arms for her. Smiling she slipped her arms around his waist and snuggled into his chest. She loved the way her arms fit perfectly around him.

“Why don’t we just do that teleporting thing James did with me earlier?” Jenna asked.

“We can only travel a couple miles. And to do that over and over again would just waste our energy. Not to mention it would do more harm to you in your human state.”

  “Oh.” Jenna nodded in disappointment.

“I said I don’t want to fly!” Lena complained as James grabbed hold of her and jumped into the sky. Lena’s scream disappeared as they did, and Jenna couldn’t help but laugh.

  “Ready?” Will asked her gently.

  Jenna looked i
nto his dark eyes and felt breathless as he lifted them off the ground and into the air. She loved the feeling of flying with Will. His sleek black wings moved silently, and Jenna could see their power as they moved up and down. She closed her eyes and held on tighter to him enjoying being so close and feeling the wind whip around her hair.

“Land, James!” Will’s voice shouted out causing Jenna’s eyes to snap open.

  “What happened?” she asked startled.

Suddenly they were surrounded by Angels as Will dove to the ground.

“Can you hold onto me?” he shouted.

  “I am!” Jenna answered.

“No, can you hold yourself to me if I let you go?” he hollered above the wind.

“No!” Jenna crushed herself to him.

“Do you trust me?” he asked.

  “Yes,” she nodded.

“Let go of me,” he called out.

“What?! Are you insane? No way!” Jenna shouted.

“Trust me, Angel!” He unclamped her hands from around his waist and dropped her.

Jenna screamed as she fell. Out of nowhere someone caught her. She turned to her rescuer and screamed again; it was an Angel she didn’t recognize.

The Angel grinned and began flying away from the fight when a sword suddenly appeared through her chest. Once again Jenna was dropped and she began plummeting to the ground. She caught a glimpse of James throwing Lena up for her to kill an Angel as he took out two before catching her again.

Jenna’s world was in slow motion as she continued her descent to the Earth below; she was too scared to scream, certain she would fall to her death when Will swooped out of nowhere, catching her. She slammed into his arms, which knocked the wind out of her. She struggled to catch her breath as Will cursed and threw her up in the air. Choking in shock, she started free falling again but didn’t have time to panic when Will grabbed her again and dove for the ground.

They landed hard. Will quickly released her and Jenna fell to her hands and knees gasping for breath. The sound of rushing wings and thuds caused Jenna to look up and gape in horror. They were surrounded by Angels.

“Kill them both,” She heard a voice order.

“I wouldn’t if I were you,” Will answered conversationally.

“Ignore him,” the same hidden voice said. “Attack!”

Jenna didn’t even have time to close her eyes as the Angels were taken down from behind in quick succession. Will lowered his sword in bewilderment and Jenna remained on the ground wondering if this were some kind of trick and the Angels would jump up to continue their attack.
