He reached out with a spell, intent on ensnaring Ellie. She smashed it away. Belt snarled in angry shock.
She didn’t wait to see what he tried next. Instead she opened a breach portal directly behind him.
It opened a rectangle onto a seething cauldron of glowing heat. The inside of a volcano, Ellie knew.
Belt turned and flung his hands up against that heat. Ellie took her chance.
She gathered Belt and Caspian both with a flick of her wrists, and then threw them towards that waiting bowl of liquid fire.
As soon as they disappeared into it, she closed the portal behind them.
She didn’t think it would kill him. That would be too easy. And he’d taken the Gem of Orlyon back, but she couldn’t deal with that. Not right then.
Thorn remained seated, holding his head in his hands. He looked at Ellie, pure wonder and amazement in his wide eyes.
Neither of them had noticed Marta pull herself agonizingly across the floor to where Arabella lay.
She pulled her sister against her and rocked her body back and forth.
“Help her. Please, help her,” Marta said.
Ellie tried to stand and barely made it to her feet, stumbling forward. She felt weak, depleted.
No, not yet. I need more! I’m not done yet!
“Bring her back!” Marta said when Ellie fell down beside them.
Ellie grasped Arabella’s face and poured power into her limp body.
Or she tried to. The power within, the magic, it flickered but didn’t ignite.
She tried again, Marta screeching in her ear. Arabella’s eyes remained closed. No webs of power formed beneath her skin, calling her essence back to her body.
It wasn’t working.
