  INTRODUCTION

The rain fell upon the grateful grass of Eiru, where Michéal the prince of all lycanthropes sat at the base of a shrine built to honour the allfather oh so long ago. Michéal’s duel swords laid to rest in the lush green grass, the raindrops running down the silver blades like marching soldiers, his skin numb to everything around him, he felt not the rain nor the cold sea air upon his skin, even the ring of bells in the distance were soundless to his fine-tuned ear. The allfather’s feet lead him to Michéal, with neither a message of joy nor sorrow, Odin simply sat next to his chosen warrior in the rain. They watched the rain fall upon the beautiful land of Eiru. Both knowing what lay ahead and why they sat there that very night, they both knew Michéal would sometime soon turn against the allfather Odin, they would clash in a battle that would make Ragnarök seem so distant so foolish so childish none would fear it’s coming should they survive this battle between God and Lycanthrope.

However, to understand how it would come to that, we must go back to the beginning, back to when Were Inc. Alpha team came to Eiru, that is where this story begins.

  DEDICATION

I dedicate the entirety of the Eiru saga to the single most kind, warm, wonderful and by far the most incredibly beautiful woman I’ve ever known, Aisling Marie Egan.

I dedicate the character of Aisling Storm to her also, your grace your intelligence your heart your endless beauty cannot be replicated, but in some small way I hope she’ll take this character as a token to the effect she’s had on me and the boundless inspiration you give me each time that you smile.

You’ve warmed my heart, every moment I’m with you is perfection, and I can only hope those moments never end.

  CHAPTER 1: WELCOME TO EIRU

F rom under the rough waves of the emerald bay swam a small team of special operatives from the medical giant ‘Were Inc’ dressed in stealthy black wetsuits and diving masks, this professional search and rescue team was sent on a covert rescue mission lead by the nightmarish Captain S. K Quis Podex, a man that saw through the mask of welcoming smiles and into the depths of depravity that ran rampant throughout Eiru, from its smallest village to the biggest city. Captain Quis Podex, even with his immense experience, he would not be prepared for what he and his team would encounter on this visit to Eiru.

The team slithered on their stomachs out of the ocean like snakes onto the cold wet grass, hidden from view by a small hill top, with a long trek ahead of them they would follow their Captain's lead, they would need to stick to the wooded areas and avoid been seen and inadvertently causing any mishaps. Their black second skin thermal uniforms, tactical armour plated vests and full facial covering masks with right eye covering devices called ‘visualizer’s’ made them look every bit the outstanding black Ops team they were. Should they fail to follow their Captain’s lead they would surely fall victim to the fabled fairy tales of Eiru’s majestic landscape.

The rush of the wind was great enough to take away sound, sound that would alert them to danger, the rain was so heavy it obstructed their vision forcing them to take shelter in a nearby cave that was closed to the outside by dense undergrowth, they cut and pulled at the undergrowth until they could enter the cave where they’d stay until it was safe to proceed any future. Once inside they removed their masks and quickly sat around a small fire their Captain had built and began to eat some of what they had in their packs. The shadows cast on the wall seemed to tell a more sinister tale then their owners, they talked to each other as openly as if they were on a night out or at a pub during happy hour.

Corporal Marie Knightley the team’s Medical officer peeked out through her highlighted brown hair with her hazel and green dual coloured eyes, her voice so soft it could have lulled even the most a savage of beasts.

“I just want to get this over with as soon as possible, I have a tour coming up next month”

  she said smiling.

Sargent Sheena Devonne chuckled then blurted out rather quickly

“I never got those tickets your promised me by the way”

while tying a braid in her strawberry blonde thick cruelly hair, her deep blue eyes glistened by the campfire, Marie grinned and raised one eyebrow then laughed while telling Sheena

“you would have’em if you didn’t go running off with Kevin to Hawaii”

they both had a little laugh with one another before they realized their Captain wasn’t joining in as he usually would!

“Captain, what’s going through your head?”

  asked Sargent Devonne,

Captain Quis Podex fixed his eyes to the flickering flames of the small fire, his shaven head reflected the waving flames like they were the burning thoughts circling around his head. It seemed he was about to pull the answer out of the embers

“I was stationed here once before, I would give everything I own to end this mission here and now”

he held his colt python revolver firmly and looked at it longingly

“if I only had the courage”

and with that he brought their conversation to an abrupt end.

With several moments of uncomfortable silence, the awkwardness was broken by a sharp and distant scream that shook the collative hearts of the team

  “It begins”

  sighed Captain Quis Podex.

The scream rang in their ears carried upon the air with waves of unrelenting pain without an apparent destination, the only thing the team knew was the scream sounded like a woman in dire need of help

  “What the hell”

yelped Sargent Devonne peeking out of the cave pushing the earbud button on her visualizer a few times, switching between the functions of the device, stopping at night vision function; she carefully scanned the darkness, her keen eyes could see nothing.

  “Move out”

  ordered the Captain,

his focus locked towards the town trying to map the quickest way to the facility that their mission required them to enter.

They put their masks on and gathered at the cave entrance

“alright, stay alert and whatever happens no one plays the hero, understood?”

asked and ordered Captain Quis Podex,

they nodded their heads in agreement then followed their Captain; racing across the marshland struggling to remain silent.

The rain hadn’t eased off at all and the wind had only grown more fierce, they held their rifles across their chest using their visualizers to detect where their team mates where and what their current medical state was, Sargent Devonne was at the rear of the group, she could see Corporal Knightley was four feet ahead of her and to her left in good health but her blood pressure was slightly above normal, while her Captain was eight feet ahead of her also in good health however his blood pressure was highly elevated! It wasn’t long before they stumbled across a cottage, weather beaten white crumbling
and worn cottage that remained only partly intact. Sections of the front and east walls had falling to the ground, no doubt caused by been exposed to the elements over the years.

The screaming had stopped but they still needed to find the poor woman, they couldn’t just abandon her, she needed help and they weren’t just going to walk away.

Captain Quis Podex hunkered down behind a large tree looking to Sargent Devonne gesturing her to scout ahead while he and Corporal Knightley moved in to position; she nodded her head and slinked away without a trace. Corporal Knightley would creep around to back of the cottage while the Captain crouched down and shuffled his way towards the front. Sargent Devonne positioned herself on a rise high above her team and the cottage, high enough to see as much of the inside of the cottage as she could, hidden in a sizable tuft of grass in the pouring rain; she swiftly switched her rifle to single shot mode and activated the thermal scanner on her visualizer. She carefully scanned what she could see of the cottage, finding a faint heat signature in the back room of the cottage; she pressed the earbud button to open a communication link to her team and announced

“faint signature in the back room, no signs of hostiles, I’m locked on to your position”

  Corporal Knightley replied

  “in position”

she switched her rifle to single shot also and readied herself

“affirmative, Sargent fix your eyes on me, Corporal on my mark gain entrance”

Captain Quis Podex ordered as he stood into the cottage choosing his steps cautiously.

He made not a sound not even as much as a squeak as he followed his rifles sights when entering the hallway, his eyes looked over every inch of the worn stone walls coated in a horrific wallpaper that seemed to have a pattern of black birds pecking at skulls on beds of thorns? He walked deeper into the cottage that got suddenly darker and darker, he was forced to activate the light on his rifle, he stopped and dropped to one knee asking

“Sargent, you got eyes on me?”

with a slight pause Sargent Devonne answered

“I got you, crystal clear, I’m good to go”

he nodded and raised his fist with a thumbs up then remained crouched and entered the kitchen with the light on his rifle lighting only what he looked at.

He stood in the doorway slowly sweeping his flashlight from left to right, he could see in front of him there was a dinner table set for a meal, but, no food could be seen? The screaming started again this time it was deafening, it was like they were standing right next to the poor woman. Captain Quis Podex decided stealth was no longer a viable option,

“Corporal on me, heading to the back room now”

Captain Quis Podex ordered as he left the kitchen aiming his rifle down the hallway filling his path with a bright UV light, he took a number of firm steps almost reaching the end of the hallway when he heard Corporal Knightley burst in the back door of the cottage, the lights of their rifles met and quickly they slightly lowered their weapons just enough to be able to see each other’s faces, they stood in a rather large bedroom with clearly unstable furniture, a table stood at the foot of a bed, a worn vanity table rested at the head of the bed, with a dull duck egg colour of paint on the walls and a gaping hole in the floor many feet away from the bed, but perhaps most importantly there was a woman lying face down on the bed half naked and as pale as the moonlight.

  “Sargent, are you seeing this?”

he tried to shout over the screaming

“I can only see you and Marie, the only other heat signature is underneath you”

she replied with her rifle fixed on her Captain.

He sighed and approached the bed, Corporal Knightley stood back with her rifle at the ready.

He approached the woman to feel her pulse, keeping his left hand on his weapon, he lowered his rifle to his side reaching out with his right hand to feel her pulse; but there was no pulse, he sighed heavily and looked back to Corporal Knightley shaking his head, when he took his hand away from the woman her eyes quickly opened and her head spun to face him, her stare was so intense Captain Quis Podex was shocked into momentary uncertainty; he didn’t know what to do! The woman suddenly seemed to come to life springing from the bed knocking Captain Quis Podex back onto the table at the end of the bed, he crashed through the table breaking the legs into dangerous chunks, he tried to get back to his feet when the woman shoved Corporal Knightley into the vanity table then leapt onto Captain Quis Podex pushing him back down onto one of the broken legs of the table that ran straight through his shoulder and into the woman’s breast penetrating her heart, Corporal Knightley and Captain Quis Podex watched as the woman let out a darting screech and began to harden and crumble like embers of a dying fire. The ash coated both Captain Quis Podex and a large section of the bedroom floor

  “Hang in there Captain”

  Corporal Knightley ordered

as she got her field medic kit from her backpack

“Sargent, the captain’s wounded, badly, we need to secure this location until I can move him do you copy”

Corporal Knightley asked over the communication link

“copy, moving in, on your six”

replied Sargent Devonne leaving her raised post and entering the cottage as quickly as she could.

Corporal Knightley wouldn’t be able to apply a permanent fix to her Captain, but it would be enough to tie him over until she had more time to examine the wound and treat him accordingly.

“I switched to CC (closed camera) viewer, I saw the end of the attack, was that a goddamn vampire?”

Sargent Devonne bellowed coinciding with the scream dying down to nothing!

Captain Quis Podex struggled to stand firmly on his own; he took as deep a breath as he could then pulled the wooden chunk through his shoulder slamming it to the ground, falling to the bed in a seated position allowing Corporal Knightley to complete her patch up.

“Get used to it, you’ll be seeing a lot more of that strange crap before we’re done here”

replied Captain Quis Podex with hate dripping from each word he spoke

“Sargent, secure the cottage, we’re going to be here for a while, Corporal watch that hole, we don't know what’s down there, I want no more surprises”

  he ordered

“I’m going to give you something for the pain, hold still”

Corporal Knightley explained giving her Captain an injection,

within moments he was asleep and resting soundly.

  “Will he be ok?”

  asked Sargent Devonne

“he’s lost a lot of blood, but he’ll pull though, he just needs to rest a while, the sedative should have him asleep for an hour maybe less”

Corporal Knightley replied helping her Captain lay down on the bed

“I’ll get myself out of sight and secure the cottage”

Sargent Devonne told Corporal Knightley turning her visualizer back to the thermal vision setting than left the cottage through the back door.

It was less than an hour before Captain Quis Podex woke with a groan

“how long have I been out?”

he asked unsure if it was Corporal Knightley or Sargent Devonne watching over him

“roughly thirty-seven minutes, Sargent Devonne is aloft, the screaming has been continuing on and off”

Corporal Knightley told him bringing him to date on what happened while he slept.

He lifted himself up taking his rifle from the bed

“stand ready, I’ll be back in five”

he instructed then jumped into the hole, he didn’t allow Corporal Knightley time to argue with him

“dam it, Sargent, the Captain’s on his feet, get ready to move”

Corporal Knightley announced but Sargent Devonne, didn’t respond? Corporal Knightley made her way to the font of the cottage hoping she could see Sargent Devonne, instead she saw a small group of well-dressed (dressed in Victorian clothing) men dredging through the marsh lands, one of them was
dragging a large burlap sack behind him.

Underneath the cottage lay a well walked tunnel, light by only by a single dull oil lamp, at the end of the tunnel, Captain Quis Podex could just about see the shape of red hangings, but he couldn’t see anyone? He lifted his rifle ready for combat as he crisscrossed his steps reaching the end of the tunnel, as he was about to take his first step out of the tunnel and into the room, a shadow whizzed by its end! It was quick but he could just about see whatever it was that cast the shadow was large and imposing, so much so, he thought he needed something bigger to bring down whatever that was; his rifle just wasn’t going to get the job done.

He stood at the end of the tunnel and took a deep breath to steady his aim then sharply stood out looking left and right, to his surprise he saw nothing! He could see nothing that could have cast the shadow; he did see a woman shackled to the wall, shackled with old iron chains. Her head hung down and her body had fell forward putting strain on her arms causing the shackles to dig into her wrists. With his experience above ground he wasn’t going to take any chances, he would be cautious when approaching the woman, he slowly got closer to her with his rifle aimed at the woman’s head, he quickly examined the woman’s body. He saw her neck has purple bruises scattered between teeth markings, her arms were riddled with shallow and deep lacerations; her body seemed to be covered with Were Inc body armor! Her hair was long and dirty but he could see her hair was golden blonde, he cautiously poked her head with the barrel of his rifle but she didn’t move, he dropped to one knee and used his rifle to lift her head up with his rifles barrel under her chin; her eyes although barely open were a beautiful blue and grey mixture but her face was beaten and covered in blood stains both fresh and old. She tried to speak but she was too weak her words couldn’t be heard, she could only mime ‘help me’ Captain Quis Podex lowered his rifle and pressed on his visualizer announcing

“Corporal, I found the woman, she’s in bad shape”

he struggled to undo her shackles, in spite their rusty appearance they were surprisingly strong
