Sebastian. My beginning and my end. A boy I was never supposed to meet had changed my life. And now that I had reached out and touched the Talisman with my mind, I knew I could not let it rest. Somehow, I vowed, I would master every secret that Agnes had bequeathed to me and wrench Sebastian’s destiny into my hands. I would not let him fade in torment for my sake. I had to find him, before it was too late, because all I had left to cling to were the last words he had said to me.
I love you.
There was no power greater than that, no mystery so deep.
The December wind blew cold and bitter across the Abbey’s lawns. It was the end of the term. Dad managed to get some leave so that we could spend the holidays together.
At home we went walking on the beach every day, watching the green waves tumble like dolphins, quiet in our shared sorrow over Frankie. I tried hard to be the girl he had said good-bye to in September, but he sensed a difference.
“Poor Evie,” he said. “It hasn’t been easy.”
“No,” I replied. “It’s all right, though. I can cope.”
He hugged me. “I know. But you’ll be glad to get back to Wyldcliffe. You’ve got friends there now, haven’t you?”
I nodded. Words were so inadequate. Yes, I had friends. Yes, I needed to get back to Wyldcliffe. My friends would be waiting.
My friends. My sisters.
My beloved.
