Pushing the hatch open, the chill of the night licks away the brief moment of warmth that surrounded her inside. She climbs out and kicks away the snow then hunkers down on the open spot of the deck. Unfolding the book, she lays it on her lap and twists open her beer, taking a sip. Lying back into the duvet to watch the heavens sparkle above her, Gabrian’s eyes dew over, blurring a fallen star as it streaks across the sky.
A torturous bout of laugher bubbles up inside of her, remembering Shane’s fumbling attempts to impress her with his stargazing date night. The laughter soon turns to sadness. Her bottom lips trembles as she looks out into the night and the sky becomes nothing more than a blur of lost moments. “I’m sorry. I am so sorry I pushed you away. I am sorry I hurt you so much.” Her words become whimpers of pain as she rolls to her side, unable to keep her eyes open. “I wish you could hear me. I am so sorry. Everything is all my fault.” Her body shakes as the tears rolls down the edges of her cheeks and the night consumes her into slumber.
Chapter Seventy-Five
Of Earth, of Life, of Summer
Deep sea green eyes drape over Gabrian’s small form, watching from just within the thinnest membrane of the Veil, longing to be near her and touch her soft alabaster skin. “I know you are sorry, and I am sorry too. The fault is not all yours to bear.”
Shane’s body tremors. The pain of seeing her this way, of letting her lay there in her misery is worse than dying in Erebus, but it is the only way right now. It would hurt too much. It is better for everyone. She does not need to see what he has become. He will watch over her from the safety of the shadows as he has done before. The Elders will protect her when he cannot, and her friend Thomas will keep her from sadness until he can return.
Only for a moment does he dare to breech the divide. Just for a breath to breathe her in. The scent of earth, of life, and of summer floods through the darkness and drowns out the crisp coolness of winter. Ripples in the night surround her as his fingers lightly trace across the edge of her jaw and smiles. She is peaceful now, no screaming, no teary dreams, just the slow steady rise of her chest and the soft hushing of her breath while her body and soul finally rest in unison for the first time in months.
Gabrian stirs in her sleep, caught somewhere between the surface of consciousness and the pull of slumber, but close enough to feel the hum of her bracelet spring to life as her Guardian lingers too close to her world.
Her eyes flutter, and he steps back into the Shadows. Torn whispers of his name cross over her lips, calling out to him as her consciousness consumes his familiar scent and pulls her deeper within the dream to chase after a boy with eyes the colour of the sea.
