  He sounded like Jacob. All work and no play. What about as partners? In life, say, although that might be a challenge with either of them. Jacob would be more willing to accept a “working” wife than would the sheriff, she suspected. She could no longer even imagine a role as a traditional wife, a life she could not and would not accept. Her sense of oneness with the sky and rocks had not left her when she was taken to the hospital. She wanted to feel it again, to capture it in photographs.

  “I can wait for you.” Charlie lifted Nellie’s hand and kissed her palm with his warm, soft lips.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

  Julie Weston grew up in Idaho and practiced law for many years in Seattle, Washington. Her memoir of place, The Good Times Are All Gone Now: Life, Death and Rebirth in an Idaho Mining Town (University of Oklahoma Press, 2009), received an honorable mention in the 2009 Idaho Book of the Year Award. Her short stories and essays have been published in IDAHO Magazine, The Threepenny Review, River Styx, Clackamas Review, and other journals. Both an essay and a short story have been nominated for Pushcart Prizes. Her debut fiction, Moonshadows, a Nellie Burns and Moonshine Mystery (Five Star Publishing, 2015) was named a finalist in the May Sarton Literary Award. Her second Nellie Burns and Moonshine mystery, Basque Moon (Five Star Publishing, 2016) won the WILLA Literary Award in Historical Fiction in 2017.
