  ​Space being at a premium, Nigel’s long-unoccupied apartment was opened up and made ready to accommodate two of the wedding guests. Ordered to give it a thorough spring-cleaning, Tilly Stephens, chambermaid, found down the back of the sofa a half-crown coin, a pencil stub, three hairpins and a glittering silver sequin such as might have been attached to a particularly striking dance costume. Briefly examining the latter – she had not witnessed that long-ago cabaret turn – she shrugged and dropped it into the dustpan. The half-crown she kept.
