Dave couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Henderson was not the kind to toss those kinds of compliments around. His ears perked up for what was to come.

“You’ve got the Chief in your hip pocket, as I’m sure you are aware. Now, he’s a relatively new chief, so having him on your side certainly isn’t a bad thing for your prospects. Problem is, he’s got a lot of new ideas about changing things and I was wondering just what ambitions you may have, when he decides to promote you again.

“Reason I asked you here is because I’m going to be putting in my papers in a couple of years and like I said, I’ve been watching you. The Chief spent most of his career in patrol. Very little detective experience. I can see him eventually moving you out of here and into patrol and frankly I think that would be a hell of a waste.

“That little squad of yours appears to be growing by leaps and bounds. Seems to me that if he does have a mind to promote you again soon, you might just want to try to finagle a Staff Sergeant spot here in Major crime. And, as I said, in a couple of years I’m out the door. If you are as ambitious as you appear to be, and if you happened to be a proven Staff Sergeant by the time that rolls around, well with all your experience in the squad - who knows…”

He paused for a couple of seconds trying to read Dave’s reaction then continued.

“If that idea appeals to you, I could maybe put on a push for just such a slot within your unit, when it grows again.

“Anything I’ve said so far of interest to you?”

  Yep…Dave was very interested.

Linda’s doctor had confirmed her pregnancy in December of ‘96 and she had given birth to a healthy boy on June third of ‘97. They named him Shaun William. Both were delighted and within days, their set routine had been turned upside down, but in a good way.

After the birth, Linda had taken off a few months on maternity leave coupled with built up booked overtime hours. She’d also arranged to have her younger sister Cathy move in with them to help look after young Shaun, before she had to go back to work.

With the expanded household, they decided to do an addition onto the house, adding two new bedrooms and one and a half bathrooms. With all that was going on, their weekends were suddenly very busy.

Murphy’s nose was out of joint. He wasn’t particularly pleased with the upheaval bought about by these new additions to the family, however, he rolled with the punches and managed to adjust to the changes it caused.
