Either way, I let him help me into it, then the five of us paddled out into the deep blue waves. Despite her complaints about Jax and Hunter when I’d gotten there, she sure didn’t seem to mind their attention as they helped her balance on her board.
Nor did I mind Wes’s hands on me, helping hold me up. Even when they wandered a bit, I kept quiet, enjoying the sensations his touch brought about.
After I ended up face planting for the dozenth time into the salty water, I wanted to give up. But when I surfaced and saw Wes smirking at me, I refused to quit. I was going to figure out the trick to this stupid board, even if it killed me.
Over and over, I got back up on that board. I didn’t care how many times I had to do it; I wasn’t stopping. And to his credit, Wes was right there beside me the entire time. Though, whether that was because he actually wanted to help me learn to surf or because he just enjoyed touching me, I wasn’t sure.
When I was able to successfully ride my first wave without falling though, he was right there beside me, celebrating. Even Hunter and Jaxson cheered for me, with Adrian cheering the loudest. She still hadn’t managed to stay up on her board, but when I looked at her, she just winked at me, and I knew right then she wasn’t even trying.
With the sun high in the sky, the five of us sat in the ocean on our boards, bobbing in the water, laughing and joking like we were all old friends. Wes was no longer glaring at me, and I was amazed at how far the two of us had come in such a short period of time. Whatever had been bothering Wes when I had first shown up, he seemed to have finally gotten over it.
“So, Bella,” Hunter said with a grin. “What was it like growing up in the ghetto? Were there shootings at the school every day? Or did people just stab each other, like in prison?”
I laughed and rolled my eyes. Clearly, Hunter had no idea how schools in Compton worked. “Nah, nothing so dramatic. We have guards and metal detectors, so you couldn’t really get weapons in easily. And most of the kids kept their beef outside of the school. There are fights occasionally, but the school is usually a neutral ground for everyone. Even gang bangers gotta learn math. Can’t have guys selling drugs on the street if they can’t count.”
The guys all laughed, but it was the truth. JP had shown me just how important education was to running the gangs around there. He always made sure his boys were educated. If they didn’t graduate high school, he made them bust their asses to get their GEDs.
Hell, he’d put more than one of them through college, just to help give himself an edge around town. He had boys working for him with accounting degrees, business degrees, and even a couple with degrees in computer science.
“Your mom was cool raising you there?” Jax asked with a raised eyebrow. Hunter nodded his agreement with the question, and it felt like everyone’s eyes were on me.
Heat rushed to my cheeks. The truth was, Mom hated having to raise me there. She’d done everything she could to keep me safe, but no matter what job she took, it was never enough to get us out of there.
Wes splashed Jax, making the other guy stutter. “Fuck off,” he said, glaring at his friend. “I doubt your mom is cool with a lot of the shit you get into. Want me to ask her about some of it?”
Jax held up his hands in defeat. With how close the three of them were, I had no doubt Wes knew all the dirt in Jaxson’s life. “All right, chill, man. It was just a question. Sorry!”
Wes smiled at me, and I smiled back. Maybe living with him wouldn’t be so bad after all.
It could certainly be worse!
Chapter 35
“I’ve got the first shower!” Wes declared. He stood near the door in the house and stretched, treating me to a great view of his muscular chest.
As much fun as it had been spending the day at the beach with him, those damned wetsuits covered up most of his body. I’d been looking forward to spending a day ogling his chiseled chest and abs. But, I had to admit, his ass had looked freaking amazing in the tight neoprene. And when he’d pealed it off before we’d left, his swimsuit had slid down, showing me the perfect V leading between his legs.
God, I had nearly fainted right then and there! So, maybe it was a good thing he’d been covered up most of the day. I’m not sure I would have been able to control myself if I had been alone with him half-naked all day.
Wes turned and grinned at me. He waggled his eyebrows and then licked his lips. “Unless you want to share?”
God damn, that was a tempting offer. The shower in our shared bathroom was easily large enough for two people, but there was no way we would be able to keep our hands off each other in there. And as much as I wanted to have sex with Wes, I was not losing my virginity in the shower.
“Pervert,” I said, rolling my eyes and hoping he didn’t notice the shiver that had gone through me. “Go shower. I’m gonna get some water, and then I’ll get one after you.”
“Movie in the theater after?” Wes suggested, and this time I nodded. I hadn’t gotten a chance to use their home theater yet, and spending the evening curled up in there with Wes wasn’t a bad way to end the day.
Wes winked at me again, then headed up to get his shower. I went toward the kitchen. After being out in the sun and ocean all day, I was more than a little thirsty.
I had just cracked the water bottle open when a noise caught my attention. I turned toward the door leading out to the backyard and saw it was open. As I took a long sip of the water, I listened, trying to figure out what the sound was. Then, I heard it again. It was like a high-pitched squeaking mixed with something grinding.
Frowning, I walked over to the door and stepped out onto the back patio. I nearly dropped the water bottle as I stared at the pool, the source of the noise more than obvious. Laying on one of the lounge chairs right beside it was Kathy. Completely naked, a guy was between her legs, thrusting in and out, the movement making the chair squeak as it rocked, the legs sliding a couple of inches back and forth against the concrete.
The man was most certainly not Lucas. He wasn't nearly as tall, nor was he as muscular. I didn't know the guy's name, but I'd seen him around before. He was a college kid who'd been hired to come by a couple of times a week to help maintain the pool. Apparently, he'd been doing more than that!
"Oh, my God!" I yelled as I stared in shock, my brain almost completely shutting down.
The two of them froze and turned to look at me. We all locked eyes as I continued to stare in horror.
As if I hadn't already had my plate full of shit going on, I really didn't need this piled on top. Without saying a word, I turned around and stormed inside. For someone who had all but accused me of being a gold digger, she had a lot of nerve.
Wes was going to flip when he found out.
And I could only imagine how Lucas would react.
