“Her shift finishes at five.”
“Okay. I’ll be your boyfriend, but between a shower and dinner, I’ll be your seal.”
Sergei looked up at him with a confused smile. “My seal?”
“I’ll perform a trick for you.” Leon waggled his eyebrows.
Sergei stared at him blankly for a few heartbeats before he snorted. “Can you balance two balls at once?”
“One way to find out.”
Glossary
Amanita muscaria. Mushrooms used in rituals to induce trances; toxic in large doses; muscimol is a drug synthesised from the mushroom that can be used more safely.
Beaivi. Sámi sun deity.
Bieggolmai. Sámi god of the winds. Usually depicted with a shovel in each hand.
billy. Cooking pot for use on a campfire.
blyat. Russian slang term for whore.
Bratva. Russian mafia.
da. Russian for yes.
EFTPOS. Electronic Funds Transfer at Point of Sale – Australian rough equivalent to debit card payments.
esky. Australian cooler; from eskimo.
genset. Diesel generator, a combination of diesel engine and electric generator.
Kalevala. Epic poetry of Karelian and Finnish mythology sung in a specific metre.
Kandalaksha. A Russian town heading the Kandalashka Gulf on the White Sea in the Murmansk Oblast.
Karelian. Relating to Karelia, a land divided between Russia and Finland.
khuyovo. Russian slang used as a curse word, khuy meaning penis, cock. Khuyovo meaning a very bad thing.
Kola Peninsula. A peninsula in northwest Russia constituting the majority of Murmansk Oblast.
kraseevyi. Russian for beautiful.
lavvu (also laavu). A Sámi shelter or tent.
Leaibolmmai. Sámi god of the hunt, the forest and its animals.
Lovozero. A town in Murmansk Oblast to which Sámi were forcibly relocated.
Murmansk Oblast. A Russian region located mainly on the Kola Peninsula. North of the Arctic Circle.
njalla. A raised Sámi food storage building usually set atop a sawn-off tree trunk to keep food safe from animals.
noaidi. Sámi shaman.
noojd. Sámi shaman from the Kola Peninsula.
nyet. Russian for no.
oblast. Constituent political entity in a federal union under the Russian Federation.
psychopomp. A person trained to guide souls to the place of the dead.
Sámi (also Saami). Indigenous people of Sápmi.
Sápmi. The cultural region including the northern parts of Fennoscandia, Northern Europe.
suka. Russian slang for bitch.
stubby. Squat bottle of beer popular in Australia.
teitäjä. A supernaturally powerful figure in traditional Finno-Karelian culture.
tupilaq. From Greenlandic Inuit religion. An avenging monster created by a shaman or witch.
Tyvek suit. Disposable hazmat suits.
ubiytsa. Russian for murderer or assassin.
ute. Australian colloquialism for a utility vehicle; a pickup truck.
yoiked (also joiked). Traditional Sámi song/chanting that requires careful breath control.
A. NYBO has tried conventional methods (a psych degree and a GC in Forensic Mental Health) but far prefers the less conventional, such as the occasional barbecue in the rain, 400km drives at 1:00 am for chocolate, and multiple emergency naps in any given twenty-four-hour period. Favourite things to do include that which can be seen (e.g. reading, writing, drawing, walking the dogs, travelling) and that which can’t, such as dreaming (both awake and asleep).
Western Australian born, she has been spotted on the other side of the planet several times–usually by mosquitoes. And discovered Amazonian mosquitoes love her just as much as they do in her home state.
