The hall was filling around her. Shauna was there, and Gina and Jennifer, and everyone else she knew. They carried little but each carried the things they thought they'd need; the things they didn't want to leave without. Mindy didn't ask how they knew or if anyone – Alek? – had contacted them.
She just rattled the keys and said, "Come on."
They'd been sold to the Vampyren but they were taking their future back.
Epilogue
It snowed in Tonopah, Nevada.
It was a rough hewn, dark gray, tiny city at 6000 feet in elevation and it snowed there in late October when they'd only been there a mater of weeks.
Sometimes even Mindy thought about Caesars and the relative warmth in Las Vegas.
Sometimes they heard the news, though even local news reports were spotty. Food was being rationed. The locals had welcomed them but resources were scarce and they were cut off by mountain passes and the fact that everybody everywhere was busy doing battle with the invaders.
The Vampyren. News still hadn't broken at general level about the Lucian.
It would.
They took an abandoned hotel that smelled of old cigarettes and had a stuffed bear in the lobby and renamed it The Merah – the opposite of the Harem. They meant to turn it to a place where girls were anything but pliant.
They trained. They joined the resistance. Some of them went home to other states.
Mindy stayed and so did Candy.
Waiting.
And then one day when snow was gusting and the sun was a memory, Alek Tybolt walked back into Mindy's life.
The sight of a Vampyren here should have filled her with fear.
It filled her with hope. And delight. And she finally admitted it – she cared about him.
She met him in the lobby, her arms going automatically around his neck as he ducked his head and bit her lip and her knees buckled and her heart sang and the future, still difficult, still cold and hard, looked brighter.
He carried her upstairs into her room.
