Brielle realized Abigail was likely acting the way she did due to lofty ambitions. If she made the juiciest show possible, ratings would increase and she would be crowned a network hero. All at Brielle’s expense. She couldn’t fathom interfering with someone else’s life like that but to Abigail, it was probably just business. Brielle hated thinking that her future happiness was just business.
She had a thought. Did the network know about this? Would Abigail tell them? Ask for forgiveness, not for permission. That seemed to be a fitting motto for Abigail.
Her eyes grew heavy and she decided that if she made it off the show alive and with a husband, she didn’t care what she had to go through to get there. The ends would justify the means, even if the process was getting increasingly difficult.
As Brielle finally drifted off to sleep, she thought about her future husband and what a glorious life they’d lead. A house, babies, dogs, weekends fixing up the front yard..she wanted all of it. The only question to answer now was, who did she want it with?
Chapter Ten
“Did anyone see you leaving?” Abigail yanked Carl’s arm into the apartment.
Carl shrugged her off. “Shea. But I told him I was taking a walk and not to snitch so we’re fine.”
She shook her head. “You need to be more careful. People are not going to be happy when they find out what’s going on.” Abigail walked over to the table and sat next to Mark, who was calmly drinking a beer.
Mark rubbed her back. “Relax, Ab. It’s going to be fine.”
She ignored him. “None of this will even matter if he doesn’t make it to the final decision.” She pushed her finger into Carl’s chest from across the table.
Carl glared at her but said nothing. Instead, he leaned back in the chair and smirked.
“This is serious.” Mark shifted forward.
“I know it is. And I’m not worried about it. Brielle’s wrapped around my finger.”
Abigail shook her head. “You don’t know that. We see all the messages she sends to the other guys. She’s pissed at you most of the time and is almost never even slightly annoyed with anyone else.”
“She hasn’t sent me home yet though, has she? Because what I’m doing is working.”
Mark rubbed his temples. “It’s worked until now. But she’s looking for a family man. Someone who can care for her and be kind and-”
“Blah, blah blah.” Carl pushed back from the table and stood up. “She says she wants a family man but deep down, she wants me. Listen, if you really think you’re right, I’ll do what you ask. But if I do it your way and she sends me home before the final decision, I still want my money.”
Abigail scoffed. “You’ll get your money when you make it to the final decision.”
“You’ll be kind, caring, and the man every woman wishes her husband would be for the rest of the week. After that, I don’t care what you do.” Mark stood up. “Let me walk you out.” Carl nodded and headed towards the exit.
Mark swung open the front door and lowered his voice. “Listen, I’ll work on Abigail. We can probably get you half the money if she sends you home early IF you do exactly what we tell you to do. And,” He pointed at his phone. “We see everything you do. So we’ll know.”
“Deal.” Carl shook Mark’s hand and left in the elevator.
Abigail was already on the couch when he came back into the apartment. “That’s handled.”
“That’s handled? He’s a livewire, Mark. This was such a stupid idea. I’m going to get fired for this.”
Mark sat next to her and tried to nuzzle her neck. “It’s going to be fine. Just relax.”
Abigail pushed her palm into his face. “Not now.”
He slinked over to the other side of the couch. “How do you think the rest of the day went?”
“It was fine. I’m worried about Shea though. He seems to be motivated today.”
“He’ll lose steam. Everything will work out the way you planned.”
Abigail shook her head. “You better be right. For both our sakes.”
