The Baby Shift- Missouri Page 4

She turned on the radio to play some upbeat music. In her passenger seat, Lance sat and eyed his paper map. “I think you made a wrong turn.”

She rolled her eyes. “I use GPS, old man. Not a paper map. Don’t worry, we’ll get there.”

He hummed in disagreement, but his smirk said that it wasn’t serious. He leaned over to

place a kiss on her cheek.

“Summer months with you,” she reminded him. “Winter months with me. You come along where I go.”

“Yes, boss,” he cooed in an overtly seductive voice. “Anything else for my human

master?” She grinned and gripped the steering wheel as they flew down the highway. They were only an hour away from meeting Eddie, Jacob’s biological father, and her late sister’s lover. Somehow, she could feel Beth beaming over the car as it travelled towards Jacob and Lance’s clan.

“There will be a feast,” Lance said as they drove. “Plenty of Shifter women will also be checking you out to see who exactly managed to snag the village’s finest bachelor.”

“Do I need to remind you that I work with sharp objects on an everyday basis?” she

asked him in a teasing voice. “I can find some tranquilizers if I need to for your bear form, too.”

“Why did I ever get involved with a human woman from the medical field?” he asked in a bemoaning voice. They laughed together as Jacob babbled happily in his car seat. “Eddie’s going to be so happy.”

She smiled warmly. She was finally excited to meet Jacob’s father, after learning the truth about his relationship with Beth. They had to catch up for lost time. Lance had told Cheryl that Eddie was recovering nicely from his latest spell of his unfortunate Shifter disease. Perhaps he’d even be able to Shift for his young cub to see.

How strange. It’d seemed a year ago that life was crumbling. Cheryl had lost her dear sister, had gained her nephew’s life to care for, and earned a life-long lover out of the ordeal. It was a mixture of grief and pure happiness. Even her estranged parents had sheepishly admitted their apologies and invited Lance and Cheryl to a family dinner out to a luxury restaurant. Grandma Lucy was happier than ever to see Cheryl happy and her own great grandson in a new family unit.

“Our crazy family is unconventional, but it works for us,” Grandma Lucy said of their strange family before Cheryl and Lance left for their trip.

“Do you think you’ll be happy with a bearish guy like me?” Lance asked her suddenly. She shot him a look.

“It’s a little late for that, isn’t it?” she asked. “Besides, I’ve always been stubborn. Just like my sister. Once we make a decision, we stick with it, no matter what. So don’t try to run away from me.”

“Like I could run from you,” he said with a sudden serious edge. Her heart flipped.

“Don’t make me crash the car, silly.”

He smirked. Jacob laughed from the back as if he’d understood everything.

She smiled. Happiness stretched before them on the open road.
