Gemma had struggled to get pregnant naturally and she and Fritz had at one time harvested some of her eggs to use as a backup plan to have her artificially inseminated. Lucky for them Gemma fell pregnant after two years of trying. She had left her donation in case they wanted another child. With both Gemma and Fritz running Bells Industries and it taking up more and more of their time, they had settled for only one child. When Gemma offered her eggs to them, Sara’s excitement at the chance to carry and give birth to a true Bells, moved Maxima to tears. After their wedding day a year ago, witnessing Sara’s eagerness to carry their baby was a close second to being one of the most memorable moments in her life.
Today, however, witnessed another miracle which left her humbled and amazed. So many dreams came true today with the birth of her daughter. Not only did she have the most beautiful baby girl, but also now she would always have a part of Gemma with her. She lifted her head and met the aged blue eyes of her ‘other daughter’ and on cue fresh tears trickled down her cheek. Gemma stepped closer to catch them with her thumb, her eyes looking at her knowingly.
“I will be with you forever now.”
Maxima pressed a kiss on Gemma’s cheek. “I know, butterfly, and I will never be able to thank you enough for giving me this double gift.”
A soft hand brushed her shoulder and Maxima turned to meet the eyes of her wife. The green eyes were gentle and slightly concerned. “You are so quiet.”
“I am happy, so happy that I am left speechless,” Maxima croaked.
“I like the sound of that. But I want you to find your tongue so you can tell them the baby’s name,” Sara said as she wiped the tears from Maxima’s face.
Smiling broadly, Maxima turned to her family, standing around the bed “Let me introduce you to our daughter, Sara Laramie-Bells.”
A loud groan sounded and Maxima frowned. Andra had her face in her hands. Gemma sported an indulgent smile while Mara just grinned at her. Gemma stepped closer.
“Maxi, I have no problem with the name, but don’t you think naming your boat, your motorcycle, your car, your—ˮ
“Don’t forget that tattoo over her heart, Grandma,” Andra interrupted.
Gemma smiled. “Yes, that too. But you can’t name everything in your life Sara. We understand why, but…ˮ
“How about Anima?”
The room fell quiet as all eyes turned to the silent woman who sat on the other side of the bed, cradling Sara’s hand. Sandra shrugged as all the attention was now focused on her. She looked at Sara and then at Maxima. “Anima brought you two together and this baby joins the two lines. Since Maxima is here, the only person missing is Anima.”
Sara held out her hand and cupped Maxima’s cheek. “My mother spoke to me about this about a month ago, but I wasn’t sure how you would feel about it. You never speak about her anymore, so I assumed you might not…ˮ
“I think it is a good name. Sandra is right. What better way to honor her?” Sara’s eyes shot full of tears and Maxima leaned closer so she could shush her wife softly. “No tears, agapate. Anima would be honored.” She looked down at the sleeping baby. “Our little princess deserves the name of a true princess.”
She looked up and their eyes held. They slowly moved closer and their lips met in a promise.
Anima lives on.
THE END
About Stein Willard
Stein started writing at the age of thirteen after feeling cheated by the ending of a novel she was reading. She took the novel and rewrote it from the ending back to the front, adding 200 more pages to it. Up until then she's only written in her native language, Afrikaans, a derivation of the Dutch language.
In 2007 she decided to experiment by writing a few short stories in English. By pure accident, she came across platforms on the internet to publish her work and was encouraged by a friend to try and post some of her stories.
Stein resides in Windhoek, Namibia.
