Dancing With Redemption (Barre To Bar Book 5) Page 17

by Summer Cooper

He knew one of the kids he’d graduated with had died in a car accident a week after their graduation. Others had ended up in jail, or they’d overdosed on one drug or another. Time hadn’t been kind to King’s Hill and as manufacturers moved their operations to China or Mexico, jobs had dried up and people began to lose hope. Not all of them had, though, and Logan would live it up knowing he was better off than all those that had hurt him, in one way or another.

His plans weren’t all about payback, though. He knew people here needed jobs and that they would work hard to keep his company there, once they saw he was a fair employer who brought more to the community than it took out of it. That was his plan for the future, but tonight, he wanted a sandwich, a shower, and to get to bed.

He’d spent the last week finalizing plans for his move and now he was exhausted, glad he’d hired staff to unpack his boxes, hang his suits, and put his other clothes away, and to make the bed up for him. Some boxes he’d marked as personal and the maid had left those alone, as directed, but the rest of his items like kitchenware and bath towels had all been unpacked and put away.

After a quick ham sandwich and a hot shower, Logan slipped into a pair of black sweatpants, and slid into bed. He set his alarm for 5 am, his normal wakeup time, and tried not to think about the past. He tried not to remember the football team or the variety of ways they’d found to torture him. He tried not to remember the humiliation and disgrace he’d been to his family when he’d been unable to fight back against the other, bigger boys.

They’d never come on their own, one at a time. Oh no, there’d always been at least three or four of the bastards, ready to punch his lights out, or hold him down and pull his pants off. They’d have a hard time doing that now, even if there were more than one of the fuckwits. Let them try.

Logan ran through the accomplishments he’d managed since he went off to FSU and became Logan Sinclair, instead of Eugene Baumgarten. His original birth certificate said that was his name, but the new certificate, the one with his middle name and his mother’s maiden name bore the name he used now. His legal name now and the man he really was, not that young man he’d once been.

When he went to FSU and changed his name, he became the guy every girl wanted, but not every girl could have. He was picky about who he slept with and chose only the best, the girls with sad eyes that needed a man to show them they were alive, even if it was only for one night. He never chose the cheerleaders or the popular girls back then. Nope, he chose the ones that needed him as a lover, not a notch in their belts.

He was still that same picky man, but he’d give the other women a chance now and, still single, probably would for a long time. Most women wanted a man that came home before 9 at night, that could take time off work to go to the movies or out on dates. They wanted a man that could take them out to dance and drink, have fun, things Logan never had time to do.

He thought about one girl from the past, one in particular, who had nearly broken him completely. A girl that surpassed all the others and filled his memory as he drifted off to sleep. A woman he’d never have because even if she was still around, he wouldn’t let her near his heart, ever again.

Logan arrived at the office next to the factory at 6:30 am. After running five miles around the woods of his home, he’d worked out in his home gym, then showered, had breakfast, dressed in one of his many tailored suits, and went off to work. He’d noted the sprawling Olympic-sized swimming pool at the back of the house, but he didn’t have time for a swim. Maybe when he got home later in the evening, but not this morning.

He walked into the office, glad to see the temporary agency had sent out the janitorial staff to set up his office and the other offices in the three-story glass building. He’d need a doorman, security staff at the entrance to the office, just in case, and clerks for a variety of departmental offices. The building was big enough to house all of those offices with his office on the top floor.

One of the benefits of the location was that it was near a bus stop and there were a few small restaurants and cafes on one side of the street to feed the workers from the factories that lined the other. A lot of the factories had closed down over the years, but there were still enough to keep the restaurants open. And now, he’d provide them with more hungry workers to feed.

He found the office set up for his personal use, put a pot of coffee on to brew, and checked the small fridge hidden behind the façade of a cabinet door. He put in the drinks, fresh milk for his coffee, and a few healthy snacks he’d bought at the large grocery store on his way to the office. With a sigh of contentment, he went to his desk, took his laptop out of his black messenger bag, and started to open emails.

He went through the reports Wally had sent, then saw that he already had applications on the website for positions at his South Carolina facility. He went through the ones marked as personal assistant applications first. One name caught his eye, and the picture she’d somehow inserted into the resume certainly drew attention.

Keily Matthews Miller. She wasn’t exactly what he was looking for, not really, but she was experienced, even if she only had one previous position that seemed to qualify her for the PA job. The other applicants were either not qualified or had done sloppy work filling out the questionnaire he’d designed purposely to weed out those not qualified for the position.

Her answers oozed confidence, ability, as well as arrogance and self-assuredness. For a moment, he wondered about her resume, about that one position. It was rather convenient that the owner of the place had died not long ago. He’d have to look the place up, see if it had actually existed, but then, he decided it didn’t matter.

This was an opportunity, a chance to get started, and if it didn’t work out, well, he’d just find someone to replace her, even if he had to bring someone out from California. He sent back an email to her, directing her to arrive at his office at one later that afternoon. Let’s see if she’d actually show up - he had to wonder if she would. Someone that confident wouldn’t enjoy being a PA, he thought.

Maybe she would, he decided as he looked her up online. Recently split from her husband, former cheerleader, just the kind of woman that he wanted to avoid. But Keily was offering herself up on a platter to him and she didn’t have a criminal record. The problem was, he couldn’t look away from her almost colorless gray eyes. He hadn’t been able to resist girls like her in high school either, but he wasn’t that same gullible kid. Now he was a full-grown man and he wouldn’t be one that lived each new day as a fresh hell. Not anymore.
