A Glint of Shadoewynne: Book 1 of the Shadoewynne Series Page 22

by Penelope Kein

He slowly put his arms down, confusion written all over his face. “I don’t understand. You can’t what?”

After exhaling slowly, I said, “I’m not comfortable with the level of physical contact we have had in the last couple of days. I feel like I am leading you all on, and I can’t just accept that we are all meant for each other.”

His face fell, and his eyes darkened. “It’s hard to accept, but it’s true.”

“I don’t care. We took care of the immediate threat, and I need to get back to my regularly scheduled life. I am going to get my stuff from David’s and I’m going to go back to my apartment. I want to stay friends, but I just can’t accept that we are all going to be together. That’s just not me. I don’t do relationships.”

Kait strode into the room, with David following close behind him. “Princess, the threat is not over. The Svikari are not going to just give up because we have Stefa in custody.”

I shook my head. I understood that he needed to keep me safe, but I was not glass, and I wasn’t going to be put on a shelf. “Kait, we are going to have to agree to disagree on this. I know the Svikari are still a threat, but I have to live my life. I am going to go back to my apartment. I also now have to find another job, since my boss was just put in fairy jail. My life is falling apart, and I have to do what I can to salvage it. Like I told Travis, we all can still be friends. I don’t think I have it in me to cut you all out of my life, but I don’t do romantic relationships.”

  “Sugar..”

“No, don’t. I have been telling you this from the beginning, and nothing has changed.”

Kait started to say something else, but the doorbell rang. We all looked at each other. The safe house was far enough out in the country that we shouldn’t have random visitors. I sighed. “Now what?”

Kait darted in front of me, and opened the door. He gasped. “What are you doing here?”

The being in the doorway chuckled and said, “Am I not allowed to visit my great-granddaughter, Kaitsja? Are you going to let me in?”
