The Devil You Know: Devington Devils Hockey Romance Page 27

by Daphne Slade

“Thank you,” she says, sitting up straighter, seemingly bewildered at how quickly this has happened.

  “But first, lose that outfit.”

  “What?” she says, blanching.

I can’t deny where my thoughts have gone at that suggestion.

“The cubicle uniform. This isn’t corporate America. Jeans, tennis shoes and a sweatshirt are fine for practice. During games, it’s Devington gear. I’ll give you a catalog to choose from, paid for by the school of course.”

“Right, of course,” June says, blushing slightly.

“I’ll fill out the slip for you to take to financial services. You start tomorrow. Be here at five in the morning.”

“Five…in the…morning,” she repeats slowly, as though making sure she heard that right.

“That a problem?” he asks with a frown.

“Not at all,” she says in a chipper voice. “I’ll be here.”

  “Good. Dismissed.”

We both take the cue and rise. I lead the way out of his office.

“A yapping dog?” she says once we’re far enough away.

I laugh and turn to her. “In all fairness, if you weren’t such a yapper I wouldn’t have seen you in nothing but your tighty-whities with the pretty blue flowers.”

“I should have asked him if it was okay to slap the players.”

“Now, now, puppy next door,” I say, throwing an arm over her shoulder. “You know what the Bible says about loving thy neighbor.”

“I also know what it says about turning the other cheek so I can slap that one too,” she says, taking hold of my arm and ceremoniously removing it from her shoulders.

She stops and turns to face me. “If I’m going to work here, you can’t tell any of them about…what happened.”

I mimic locking my mouth with a key. “Your secret is safe with me.”

She relaxes and a smile of relief comes to her face. It becomes a bit more cynical. “Are you going to behave yourself?”

I give her a challenging look. “So long as you manage to keep your clothes on around me. I know how difficult that is for you.”

She sighs and shakes her head. “Whatever, annoying boy next door. That’s something you’ll never have to worry about again.”

  “If you say so.”

“I guess I’ll see you tomorrow morning. Thanks for the job.” She gives me a begrudging smile, then spins on her flats and walks off.

I watch her go with a growing smile on my face.

This was either a very good idea…or a very bad one.
