By then, Even’s anger had subsided, but when he turned to Stella to ask if she wanted to grab something to eat at the diner, he saw she was shaking.
Instinctively, Even wrapped Stella in his arms. “It’s okay. You’re okay,” he said, stroking her hair gently.
In his arms, Stella trembled, and Even tightened his embrace. “Chris can’t hurt you. He doesn’t even know where you are, and if he did find you, well…” Even darkly trailed off. After his parents, Even had vowed never to kill again, and he hadn’t. In every battle the SPA had fought, he’d only incapacitated his foes. But if Stella’s life was on the line, he’d kill for her.
Again, Even felt the crackle of electricity between them. He looked at her arms, which were wrapped around him, and little wisps of power radiated from her. Even had seen Stella use magic a million times, but each time was as awe-inspiring as the first. It didn’t matter that he could shape-shift into a bear. That was nothing compared to Stella. When the magic flowed through her, she looked like a goddess.
“I… I…lo—” Even stopped himself before he said too much too fast. He sat back and gazed at Stella. “Are you okay?”
Stella shrugged. “I guess. I mean, Chris didn’t say anything that I haven’t heard before, and we got out of there before he caused any real trouble.”
“Exactly,” Even agreed, trying to sound upbeat. “Let’s not let him ruin our night.”
Stella offered him a tentative smile. “Okay. What do you say to burgers, fries, milkshakes, and a game of air hockey?”
Even grinned. “Perfection.”
Once they were in the diner, Stella’s tension faded away, and the couple began to relax.
They both ordered burgers and fries, with a milkshake each and onion rings to share. As Stella dipped her fries in her milkshake, Even screwed up his nose.
“You’re crazy,” he said, dunking his own fries in ketchup.
“You’re the crazy one. This tastes amazing. Unlike ketchup. Yuck.”
Feeling brave—Even always felt brave when he was with Stella—he poked one of his fries in his milkshake, then brought it to his mouth. She was right. The creamy, sweet coolness of the milkshake went perfectly with the fries’ warm, crispy saltiness.
“You’re right,” Even confessed sheepishly, dipping another fry in his milkshake.
Stella smirked. “I usually am.”
After they’d eaten, they played air hockey, and Stella cheated with magic to win. Their earlier confrontation with Chris was forgotten as they fell into a comfortable synchronization that was so familiar that it almost made Even forget this was a date. But in the back of his mind, Even was acutely aware that this wasn’t just he and Stella hanging out like they so often had in the past. This was a date, and certain things were expected on dates.
Even glanced up at Stella, his green eyes seeking out hers, and she gazed back. She offered him a coy smile that made Even’s heart pound.
“Let me know when you want to head back,” he said, trying to sound casual.
“Tired of getting your ass whipped?” Stella teased.
“You only won because you cheated,” Even returned, moving in closer and pulling Stella into his arms. Then he tickled her in the ribs. Stella squealed and squirmed in his arms. They’d play fought before, but never like this. Even felt his body heat, and he realized he and Stella were pressed together.
Gulping down a deep breath, Even took a step back.
“Are you going to be this shy when you walk me to my room later?” Stella asked, her dark eyebrow raised.
“I… Uh… We…” Even stammered.
Stella smiled and raised herself on her tiptoes. She pressed her lips gently against Even’s as she looped her arms around his neck. Spurred on by Stella’s touch, Even grabbed her waist and tugged her closer. With Stella flush against his chest, her breasts pressed against him, he slipped his tongue into her mouth and deepened the kiss.
Around them, all the overhead lights in the diner flared, and then the fuses blew.
Breathless from kissing, Even stepped back and gazed down into Stella’s glowing eyes. “We should probably head home before we break all the electrics,” he murmured huskily.
“Sure,” Stella replied with a wry grin.
Even entwined his fingers with Stella’s, and the couple left the diner. The town was quiet and the evening air warm as they walked hand in hand back to the library that served as the SPA’s headquarters.
Even was relieved to see that his brothers weren’t gathered in the main meeting room, ready to pounce on him and Stella the moment they returned home. He assumed he had their mates to thank for the peace.
“I’ve never seen it so quiet,” Stella said as they walked upstairs to the sleeping quarters.
“I’ll have to buy Laura and Tori donuts tomorrow to thank them for keeping Sam and William away,” Even said as they reached the landing that led to the long hallway connecting the individual bedrooms.
David’s room was at the end of the hallway with Even’s next to it, and Stella’s room was on the opposite end, right by the stairs. The other rooms were now vacant since his brothers, Sam, William, and Axel, had all moved into homes with their mates. In fact, Axel had recently returned to Union with his mate, Anika, to the paranormal community where she’d lived for the past five years, which was led by a pair of five-hundred-year-old vampires. Even was happy for his brothers, but he still missed them desperately.
“This is me,” Stella said, coming to a stop outside her bedroom door.
Even moved in closer, reaching out for Stella and pulling her into his arms.
“Do I get a goodnight kiss?” he asked, nuzzling against her neck.
“What was that back at the diner?” Stella returned with a smirk.
“Just a kiss,” Even quipped, then crushed his lips to hers.
As their mouths met, Even felt their air spark with magical energy, and he knew they’d blow the library lights. He didn’t care. Kissing Stella was nothing like he’d ever imagined, and he’d imagined it a lot. It was a million times better than his fantasies could ever be.
