  And maybe they’d put a stop to it.

  Maybe so.

  But he didn’t want to think about it anymore. Sometime in the future, they might be approached again by another agent wanting to protect them from the vicissitudes of everyday life, but for now they had beaten it and he had the feeling that it would be a long, long time before they would be bothered again.

  “Qué… What time is it?” Manuel asked. “Does anyone have a watch?”

  “Does anybody really know what time it is?” Jorge said, pulling out his cell phone to try and call Ynez.

  “Does anybody really care?” Joel took out his phone to call Stacy.

  “I know what time it isn’t.” Hunt smiled tiredly. He glanced over at Beth. “Half past a monkey’s ass, a quarter to his balls.”

  Manuel looked confused, but Beth laughed, hitting his shoulder, and Hunt looked up into the blue sky, breathing in the clean desert air, as she took out her own phone and used it to call for a ride home.
