The Baby Plan: A Cozy Mystery Page 14

by Kathi Daley

“They’re going to monitor things tomorrow, but as long as everything looks good for both the baby and me, they’re going to let me go home tomorrow around dinner time.” Bree frowned. “I’m excited to get Ella home, but kind of scared as well. Your mom offered to stay with us for a few days to help with Ella until we could establish a routine. At first, I didn’t think I wanted her there, but now I’m thinking that having her there would actually be comforting.”

“So ask her. I’m sure she’ll be thrilled.”

Mom showed up shortly after that, so I handed Ella to her grandma, kissed Bree on the cheek, promised to call her tomorrow, and then Tony and I headed home.

“Well, that was intense,” I said as we drove up the mountain.

“She’s a beautiful baby. I think she has your smile.”

“That’s what Bree said.” I yawned and laid my head back. What time was it anyway? Two? Three? By the time we got to bed, it was going to be time to get up. Thankfully, neither Tony nor I had anything we had to do today, so I supposed we could sleep in as long as we wanted to.

When we arrived at the house, we found all five animals waiting by the front door.

“I think they were worried,” I said as Tony let the dogs out for a quick bathroom break, and then we all headed upstairs.

After I got into bed, I rolled over onto my side. Tony curled his body into my back, and Tilly jumped up onto the bed and laid down against my chest. I put an arm over Tilly as Tang settled onto the pillow next to my head. The mattress shifted as Kody and Titan curled up at the foot of the bed.

  “Tinder?” I asked.

“Sleeping on the pillow behind me,” Tony said.

I smiled as I closed my eyes. I supposed one day Tony and I would have actual human children, but at this moment, with my husband and my fur babies, life felt complete. I wasn’t exactly sure what the future might hold, but I did know that at that moment, things were exactly as they were meant to be.
