INTRODUCTION
Once upon a time in a place called Consolacion, a peaceful place full of happy thoughts and very loving neighbors, lived a girl named Linde. Everybody in her village knew her because she was so lovely, bubbly, and a charming kid. She was willing to help everyone as much as she could. Her family was not as rich as Piah’s family. Piah was Linde’s best friend. They knew each other since they were 4 years old. Linde’s mother worked as cook in Piah’s mother’s house.
CHAPTER ONE
On Thursday morning as early as 6 o’clock, Linde went to the market to buy food. While walking to the bakery, “Good morning Linde” the florist greeted. “Good morning Mrs. Flora, your flowers are so fresh and beautiful!” Linde replied. Come over here Linde, I have something to show you.” “What is it Mrs. Flora?” Linde asked. “I know how much you love flowers especially red roses, so I’m giving you these three lovely red roses. Put them in your room so that you can remember how beautiful life is.” Mrs. Flora explained. “No Mrs. Flora, this is your business. I can’t take it for free. Here take this as my payment.” No Linde, they are yours, a token for being so nice.” Mrs. Flora insisted. “Okay Mrs. Flora as you say... thank you so much, I’ll pay for them in some other way soon.” Linde said it politely while living Mrs. Flora’s shop. She waved good bye and shouted, “Thank you so much Mrs. Flora, thank you and have a great day!”
A few blocks from Mrs. Flora’s flower shop were Mr. Bob’s bakery. “Hmmmm! The bread smells good and delicious,” Linde said to herself while trying to suppress the growling in her stomach. “Oops! I never noticed it’s almost 7 o’clock and I haven’t eaten my breakfast.” She ran towards Mr. Bob’s bakery. “Good day Mr. Bob. Your bread smells so good that it makes me hungry,” Linde said while hugging Mr. Bob. “Don’t jokes with me Linde,” said Mr. Bob laughing loudly. Ok for that, I’ll give you 2 loaves of bread for free. “Really, Mr. Bob? Thank you so much!” Linde exclaimed. “But honestly your bread tastes good Mr. Bob. Thank you again and have a good day ahead.”
But before Linde went back home, there was this one store she never forgot to pass by. She stood by the window for a minute, stared at the store and said to herself, “One day I’ll have to learn how to do those things.”
Linde belonged to a middle class family, she had a 17-year old brother Jao, a 14-year old sister, Acy and the youngest was Yuel, who is 7 years old. Linde was 20 and was always top in her class. She graduated with honors at San Narciso School. Unfortunately, she couldn’t continue on her college year to pave way for her younger brother and sister because her parents couldn’t afford to send all of them to school at once. So, she had to help her mother with work at Piah’s house. She was her mother’s assistant. That’s why they became good friends with Piah. Piah was also a good kid, she loved playing and talking with Linde each time she came home from school and even taught Linde some lessons she had learned.
When Linde arrived home from the market, she found her father sitting on a hair outside. “Good morning father, where is Jao, Acy and Yuel? Aren’t they up yet for school?” She asked. Her father just nodded and continued reading the newspaper he was holding. “Jao, Acy, Yuel!” She shouted as she prepared their breakfast. Come on guys. Wake up or you’ll be late for school! Yuel went out first, kissed his father on the forehead and said, “Good morning father, looking great each day!” His father smiled. Then off to Linde and hugged her, “good morning sister”. Now, sit down and eat your breakfast while I go and wake your sister. When she entered Acy’s room, “wake up you sleepy head or you’ll be late for school,” she said picking up the clothes that were scattered on the floor right from the door step all the way to Acy’s bed. “Acy you must start being responsible. You must learn how to keep your room clean. Mother and I will not be there forever for you, so you have to learn to take care of yourself. Even though you’re just 7, picking your clothes and putting them is the bin is not that hard after all.” Linde explained while trying to wake her up. “Alright, alright I have heard you Linde. I’m not deaf and so you don’t have to tell me that every day. I have understood every word you have said.” “I won’t be reminding you every day – every passing second, minute if you do what is right.” “Blah, blah, blah …” Acy said as she made fun with her face. “Ok Linde, I’ll do as you say, now… can you just leave me alone as I have to change,” she shouted while pointing at the door. So Linde went out and continued with her chores in the house.
At the dining table as they were having their breakfast, the phone rang… “Kring…kring…kring…” Linde stood to answer the phone. “Good morning, how may I help you?” She asked. “Is Linde Mayers there?” A voice on the other end inquired. “This is Linde speaking.” “Hello Miss Mayers, I am Andrea from Caro and Marie Stores. I have good news for you my dear. Can we meet on Saturday at 8:00pm at the coffee shop adjacent to the Caro and Marie Stores? I can’t say it over the phone it’s very important and I know you’ll be happy and glad to hear the good news,” the lady at the other end of the line sounded with a lot of excitement. “Okay Miss Andrea, see you on Saturday night and thank you very much.” As she put down the phone, she couldn’t tell how and even where Miss Andrea got their number. But Mr. Mayers saw some hope, excitement and happiness in her daughter’s face.
Alone at home with her father, Linde continued with her duties in silence. She cleaned the house making sure everything was tidy - from the ceiling to floor. Then she set off to the backyard to feed the chicken and w
ater her plants. That was her daily routine. Watering plants was her favorite task. If only plants could talk, just to give Linde words of encouragement! “Well, at least I’m happy that you are always there to witness all the dramas of my life” Linde said, as she watered and gently touched each petal and the leaves of the flowers. “Alright my friends, I have to go as I need to do some laundry before my siblings’ arrival.” She left winking to the flowers.
As she did her laundry, it was typical for her to hum her favorite song. “La..la..la..la..humm..humm,” she sung. She didn’t notice that every time she did this her father was keenly watching over her with a broad smile and trying to sing along with her. “If only I can sing with you my sweet, Linde!” Mr. Mayers said to himself. “One day, sweetheart, you’ll have what you want and what you have always dreamt of for this time. But for now you have to wait until the right time comes. Sorry my dear for what you are experiencing at the moment,” he said as Linde watched him with a grin.
