CHAPTER SEVEN
Back at home, Jao, Yuel and Acy were watching a program on T.V. They had had a good day playing with their friends and today being a Saturday, they liked watching a certain program on T.V. on the other hand, Mrand Miss Mayers were in their room trying to figure the events of the day. Mrs. Mayers had made up her mind. She had decided to call it quits with the Williams but the problem was, if she quit job, what was the family going to do. This decision sent a cold chill down Mr. Mayers spine.
Although he sympathized with his wife, he did not have another option for the family’s source of income. He had tried his best since losing his job as a manager at a certain government firm and had used the better part of his savings to pay for the family’s upkeep and school fees for his children. His savings were running low and he did not see any hope of ever replenishing them. The only thing that kept him strong was his belief in God. He knew God will always be with him regardless of the situations at hand.
Yuel, was the first to fall asleep. He had complained of being so tired after having had a playful day with her friends. He was very fond of Linde and thought he missed company here. Jao and Acy were less concerned with her. They concentrated on their issues more than Yuel’s problems. He slept on the couch.
“My beloved wife, I am very sorry for what is happening but let keep on praying to God. He has every purpose for what happens to everyone. I know it wasn’t your wish to go through all this but I am sure sooner or later things will be ok. Now, tell me your immediate plans after deciding to quit the housekeeping job at the Williams,” he asked. “None at all but I am just fed up. I can’t stand all the insults just because somebody is paying me. I know we are poor but that doesn’t make us a laughing stock of the entire village. I did not disclose my intentions to Mrs. Williams as I wanted to consult with you first. Now my question is what your plans are.” The question hit Mr. Mayers like a bombshell. How could he have thought of any plan when he didn’t know she was quitting? He thought for a while. Well, let me sleep over it and I am sure I will have a better answer tomorrow. I will let you know what I intend to do to salvage our deteriorating financial status.
When Mrs. Mayers walked into the living room, she found Yuel fast asleep. She picked him up and took him to his room leaving Jao and Yuel to wind up watching their favourite cartoon movie. “When it is over, make sure you turn off the T.V. I have already prepared your rooms so that you can go to bed afterwards,” she said. She went back to her room where she embarked on arranging her clothes. Linde had washed them and piled them on her bed. Mr. Mayers on the hand had taken out his old book and was busy perusing through the pages in silence. Everything went silent as everybody concentrated on their issues
