I placed a hand on his shoulder. “If you don’t want to, you shouldn’t be forced to. Let it be your decision.”
He shook his head. “But my mother worked so hard to make this ranch what it is today. I have to do this because of her.”
“Well, you—” I started to say but a knock on the door interrupted me.
We stared at the door for a minute, before Edgar spoke, “Who’s there?”
“Mary. There is a detective here to see you,” the cook’s voice replied
“A detective?”
She was right. After I was dressed and we both went downstairs, a chubby man with a mustache was waiting for us. Edgar didn’t know him and they made their brief introductions.
“Detective Reade,” the man said. “I’ve been trying to reach you, Mr. Walton.”
“Oh, I switched off my phone because I didn’t want any kind of disturbance.”
“Right. There is something I’ll like to talk to you about,” Detective Reade said and then glanced at me. His gaze told me he didn’t want me there.
Edgar quickly said, “Sally is my friend. Tell me whatever it is you want to tell me.”
“Alright,” he responded and pulled a folded paper from his briefcase. “Something happened this afternoon. It concerns Yelena Walton.”
“What about her?”
“Unfortunately, we found Miss Walton’s dead body in her house this afternoon. Her son called it in.”
I gasped. Aunt Yelena was dead? When I looked at Edgar, his expression was of shock. He had talked about seeing her only this morning. How could she be dead now?
“But, I met with her this morning. How’s this even possible?”
“Yelena was shot dead in her study. Forensics are still working on getting the murder weapon. No one saw anything, not even the workers.”
“Could it be… could it be…?” I stuttered, not sure of how to ask. Maybe she took her own life. No one had any idea of what others were battling. I shut my eyes and remembered how my own life had become a mess, that night when my mother had decided to take her life.
“Suicide?” Detective Reade asked. “Well, I wanted to rule that out as there was no sign of forced entry, but while we were searching the study, we found something else in her hand. It looks as if the killer left it there or maybe it was Miss Walton’s way of passing a message on to you.”
That was when he handed Edgar the folded paper in his hand. Edgar opened and read it. I saw his shoulders droop. I took the paper from him and saw something had been typed on it. It was addressed to Edgar and it said – This is just the beginning, Edgar.
