The Silent Ones was inspired by several historical news stories that left a question in my head: if two children committed a terrible crime and fell silent, how would that be resolved? What would be the reaction of the families involved?
Then a nice little complication posed itself: what if the children were cousins and their mothers were sisters? I got to thinking about how a dilemma such as this could easily set families against each other.
Even in happy families, we learn to tolerate each other based on years of getting to know each other, and anticipate how we’ll react to certain situations. But such a crime could fracture all that, exposing old secrets and stresses within the family unit.
And this was my starting place for writing The Silent Ones.
The book is set in Nottinghamshire, the place I was born and have lived all my life. Local readers should be aware that I sometimes take the liberty of changing street names or geographical details to suit the story.
