  Santa Fe, NM 87507

  Dear Dr. Kelly:

I am pleased to take this opportunity to inform you that you have been selected to receive this year’s Director’s Medal for Exceptional Achievement.

Once per year, each of the 56 field offices of the FBI selects, by votes of the highest-ranking agents, a civilian who has demonstrated qualities of courage, selflessness, and patriotism, frequently at the risk of personal safety. You have been chosen by the Albuquerque Field Office to receive this award.

In addition, one other field office has—uniquely, in the experience of this Bureau—elected to name you as well.

While I am not at liberty to disclose the identity of this office, you may rest assured it is one of our most significant. In light of this extraordinary development, your medal will be presented to you with a star of commendation for bravery.

We look forward to your presence at FBI Headquarters, 935 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, on the first of next month, at 10:00 am, where—along with the 54 other recipients—you will receive your award. It will be my great privilege to confer it upon you.

  Sincerely yours,

  Marissa Greeley

  Director, Federal Bureau of Investigation

  About the Authors

The thrillers of DOUGLAS PRESTON and LINCOLN CHILD “stand head and shoulders above their rivals” (Publishers Weekly). Preston and Child’s Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities were chosen by readers in a National Public Radio poll as being among the one hundred greatest thrillers ever written, and Relic was made into a number one box office hit movie. They are coauthors of the famed Pendergast series, and their recent novels include Crooked River, Old Bones, Verses for the Dead, City of Endless Night, The Obsidian Chamber, and Blue Labyrinth. In addition to his novels, Douglas Preston writes about archaeology for the New Yorker and National Geographic magazines. Lincoln Child is a Florida resident and former book editor who has published seven novels of his own, including such bestsellers as Full Wolf Moon and Deep Storm.

Readers can sign up for The Pendergast File, a “strangely entertaining” note from the authors, at their website, PrestonChild.com. The authors welcome visitors to their alarmingly active Facebook page, where they post regularly.
