“There is more Sir.”
“Again, with the Sir Jeffrey. Just out with it.”
“Well, she took some things.”
“Yeah, so you said, a little bit of money and some clothes. What do I really care about that? Was it a large amount of money or something? It couldn’t have been too much. I have limits on the accounts she has access to.”
Jeffrey waived Frank off and told him that it was only ten thousand or so.
“That is nothing really. She can spend that on a good day shopping. Just tell me what it is that has you still hesitating. You know this infuriates me to no end Jeffrey.”
Jeffrey took a deep breath and Frank could see that he was having a hard time of it. The older man was his father’s second, so he had been to war with his father dozens of times. In all the time that Frank had known him, he had never once looking so upset before. It was starting to make him nervous and he asked him if his father was okay. What else could it be? Nothing that she was able to steal, would matter that much.
“Your father? Yes, he is fine. Although, when he finds out about this, I don't know if that will still be true. He is going to be devastated, the whole clan is going to be devastated.”
Frank couldn't imagine what it was that would be so devastating to the whole clan and his father. There was nothing that was that important, except maybe himself and a sister. Maybe they were important, but nothing else that would devastate the whole clan.
“Tell me what it is. Tell me now! I tire of these games!”
Frank had lost all patience, and he wasn’t going to be able to hold it in anymore. He wanted to know what was going on and he wanted to know immediately. He would not take the back and forth any longer. He had to know. All of the not knowing and coming up with something in his head, was surely worse than anything that Jeffrey was about to say.
That's what Frank thought anyways. until they heard what the old man was trying to sputter out. It all started to make sense. He had never seen Jeffrey in a state before in all of his life. This was an unprecedented problem, and it was all his damn fault.
“The moonstone! You can't be serious. Tell me that you're joking.”
“Do you really think I would joke about this?”
Frank wanted to bark at him and yell at him, because there was nothing but frustration running through him. Guilt. Especially that. He was going to have to tell his father that his wife had betrayed him and took away the one thing that kept the clan safe. It was what kept them protected from all of the evils that were lurking in the dark for them. They had lived in peace, because of a moonstone that hid them from the world. It was insane to imagine that it was gone. He felt like he was more vulnerable than he had ever felt before. It was disconcerting and he was aghast at the idea of it.
With the moonstone gone, the Cavalier Clan was going to be exposed and would have to truly go in hiding. But first, he had to tell his father. He could already see the disappointment in Jack’s eyes.
Chapter 1
Ten Years Later…
“Now Anna, I don’t know why you are fighting me on this, you know the rules.”
His daughter was the spitting image of her mother. Long red hair, pouty lips, and a look of the very devil on her face. Yeah, it was hard to ever forget about Elizabeth, when their daughter was just as spirited and spunky as she had been, not to mention Anna was a carbon copy of her.
It was never clearer to Frank, then when his daughter was pouting about something and wanted her way. Her mother had done much of the same and he had fallen for it every time.
“I don’t understand why I can’t go to the sleepover. I just don’t!”
Anna was upset, her face was turning as red as her hair and she had a red that was creeping up her neck as well. He knew that she was going to have a melt down and all he could do was brace for impact. Anna was spoiled a bit too much, most likely because he had given her everything that she wanted. He had felt bad about it all, really bad. Picking her mother, was one of the worst mistakes that he could have made, and it directly affected his daughter. He hated that part of it, and it was the bit that he couldn’t forgive himself for.
Spoiling her though because of it, had not done her many favors. She was so hard to deal with and it was only getting worse. She needed a mother, someone to guide her, but their life was one of hiding. It had been that way since she was a baby, so she knew no other way. They lived in the human world now, she’d been raised that way, so she really didn’t get, why she couldn’t have what all of her peers had. They had normal lives and Anna could only hope for such a thing.
“You know that I want you to be happy baby, but sometimes you have to just trust me on things, and this is one of them. We don’t need to get to know anyone here, we aren’t going to be staying long, just a couple more weeks.”
She went into a tantrum about how she didn’t want to leave again, and it cut into Frank’s heart. He was trying his best to figure out what and where they were going to go next. He did not need her acting like a brat as well. His daughter should have been used to it by now, if that was even possible. Frank wished that he wasn’t in that position, that neither one of them were, but he knew that he didn’t have a choice. It was all because of her mother and she could never know.
When it was over, Frank tried to calm her down with the idea of a new nanny. She wasn’t happy about it though. She just gave him this dead pan look of disappointment. “So, I take it you’re going to be gone again, huh?”
He agreed but didn’t like that she could call it so well, like that was all he did was leave her. That wasn’t true and he wished that he didn’t have to at all. He didn’t have a choice though. All he could do was go with it and that meant hiding, looking for the moonstone and trying to get back to where he was, saving his clan, instead of tearing it asunder with a love that he hadn’t truly understood. Elizabeth had changed all of their lives and he had caused it all, bringing her into the fold, by insisting on going against tradition and letting the clan’s elders choose his bride.
Frank had never been one for tradition, especially when it came to finding a life mate. He had fallen in love with Elizabeth and fought to be able to marry her. He was supposed to leave his fate in the hands of the elders, but he couldn’t. He had gone against his father, everyone really, just to have Elizabeth. He’d thought that it would be enough. He’d thought that their love would conquer all and when she produced an heir, how could he think different?
Then she was gone and now Frank was trying to figure it all out in her absence. The father side of it, was harder than all of the rest.
He’d had to leave the outback of Australia and move into the city. At the same time, his father had taken the clan further into the brush and he never seen them anymore. People were after his clan, their enemies had been for years, because of the power they held. Others wanted it, but the moonstone had kept them cloaked in secrecy. Once that was gone though, they were out in the open and only getting it back, would let them ever be able to come out of hiding.
That had sent Frank on a quest the last ten years. He’d known that it was all his fault, so of course, he was the one that went searching, week after week, year after year, looking for the stone that could bring it all back, the life that they had. It was his only job as the Alpha’s son. He would never take his father’s place, until the Cavalier Clan could show their face again.
He’d thought that it wouldn’t be hard. The stone had been stolen and he had assured himself that he would find it. It wouldn’t take long, he told himself. But his daughter was almost ten. That should have told him a long time ago, that nothing was going as planned.
***
Frank called up the nanny service he’d used for years and talked to Bambi. It was a beautiful blonde that had tried to catch his eye more than once, but he’d refused and made it clear he wanted a nanny for his daughter, nothing else.
He didn’t have time for a social life. He barely had time then for everything th
at was going on. As much as he liked to think that Bambi would get the hint, she hadn’t, not yet. She still pushed him to think about what he would like to do to her. That was a lot to think about, considering that it had been so long, he was worried about how he would manage. Could a man forget such things?
“Hey Frank. It’s really good to hear your voice, though I know you didn’t call just to talk to me.”
Bambi had disappointment in her voice and Frank didn’t know if it was real or not. He didn’t understand her at all, never had, though he figured that it was just all a game to her. Bambi saw him as a conquest and didn’t seem to mind being the aggressive one. While some women would find that hard, Bambi didn’t at all. She seemed rather keen to let Frank know how badly he was wanted. Frank didn’t worry about it though. He wasn’t looking, not for a woman anyways.
“You would be right Bambi. I am calling to see if you got anyone else on the roster that wants to come by?”
Bambi blew out a breath. “I talked to the old woman that just left and she seemed convinced that your daughter was possessed.”
Frank chuckle. “Yes, well, my daughter liked to play pranks on her. I thought that she would last longer, but she just wasn’t cut out for the job.”
She sighed again. “It doesn’t seem like no one is up for the job.”
“Come on Bambi, you know that she is a good kid. She just needs some guidance, and it doesn’t seem to work when I try.”
“I can’t tell you how to raise her Frank, but maybe stay home a little bit. I know that you have more money than God, so what do you need to be gone all the time for?”
He pressed his lips together and told her that if she didn’t have any other options, he would simply go somewhere else. Frank knew that Annalise was a bit of a handful, but he loved her more than anything and didn’t want to see that. He didn’t want to think that he had caused such worry. He wanted to believe that there was a good side of her. It was just that she was craving a woman’s guidance and she didn’t have it. Frank wanted to believe that once he found the right nanny, his daughter would straighten up. He wasn’t able to do it, not the way it was. He had too much on his mind, namely finding the stone and returning his clan to glory.
