  “Tarus?” I spoke to him fondly, as I wasn’t sure if his soul was something he wanted to give me.

  Had I interpreted his hints properly? Right now wasn’t the best moment to endure feelings of rejection. The question lingered as I thought of the best way to ask Tarus for his soul.

  “I want to give my soul to you…if you want it?” I asked, my eyes lowered, afraid of being rejected on my deathbed.

  I had decided that to give my soul to him was easier than to ask to have his, even though it meant the same, our souls would be entwined.

  “Oh Susy, I was afraid that you wouldn’t ask.”

  His lungs deflated as if they had been punctured. He had already thought of the idea, given me all the clues and had been afraid that I wouldn’t ask. It was clear; Tarus knew he had no right to ask me. I was the only super symmetry energy, no one was supposed to desire me and I wasn’t supposed to have lust for another soul. He didn’t want to give me the dilemma now in this misery. He already held my hand just as he knew about the spell, already prepared to give his soul without giving a second thought to the consequences it would bring. That we would be bound as one within three metres, we would hear each other’s thoughts, feel each other’s emotions, enjoy each other’s happiness, suffer from each other’s wounds, see each other’s visions, find out about each other’s memories and create the same goal. I had never been to Nirvana and hence couldn’t even guess what was coming, but if our souls didn’t look like our bodies, with this spell we would bind our souls and be able to find each other even after death.

  “Do you remember how the spell read? We must chant it at the same time,” I urged and pressed hard on his hand.

  “I have known it by heart since the day we met,” he replied.

  After we pronounced the words, he knew that I would know all his secrets. But he looked more ready and certain than he would ever be, about anything in his life. So we began to read:

  Let me confess that we two must be twain,

  Although our undivided loves are one;

  So shall blots those that do with me remain,

  Without thy help, by me be borne alone.

  In our two loves there is but one respectable,

  Though in our lives a separable spite,

  Which, though it alter not love’s sole effect,

  Yet doth it steal sweet hours from love’s delight.

  I may not evermore acknowledge thee,

  Lest my bewailèd guilt should do thee shame,

  Nor thou with public kindness honor me

  Unless thou take that honor from thy name.

  But do not so, I love thee in such variety

  As, thou being mine, mine is thy good report.

  Villhelm shot us a look of panic and thump his fist, as in an emergency, over the big green button and, in the next second, vanished into invisibility. Tarus stood up, leaned over me and, with a shaky hand, started to pour the potion in my mouth. He closed his eyes and I could feel a single tear dripping down on my forehead, which panicked me. Tarus had never cried before; not a single tear, and I was afraid that he wouldn’t allow himself to be healed with the fire-rose. Would he accept, or would he live with a broken heart for the rest of his life?

  Halfway through the bottle I coughed and felt a burning and scratching sensation in my throat. My body pulsated and the stinging pain from my throat worked its way down to my chest and filled my arms and legs with heat and soreness. I didn’t want to show my dear followers my agony, but had to turn and twist a little to try to minimise the discomfort. The aching was intense and I couldn’t help but release a few moans through clenched teeth before I heard Tarus start to read the spell, still with eyes closed and slightly shaking his head. After the spell’s last words the substance I had drunk would absorb my forces that would then flow through my veins into the tubes to the machine and explode when they crashed into each other to become a liquid, which would be imprisoned around the power stones and act as a source of energy.

  Time’s glory is to calm contending kings,

  To unmask falsehood and bring truth to light,

  To stamp the seal of time in aged things,

  To wake the morn and sentinel the night,

  To wrong the wronger to he render right;

  To ruinate proud buildings with thy hours,

  And smear with dust their glittering golden towers;

  To fill with worm-holes stately monuments,

  His voice continued dutifully and I could hear that it broke, on the verge of tears, as my vision became increasingly blurred.

  A lion walked into the room, which I could just make out with my faltering eyesight, together with Eutychia and an older man whose features I couldn’t distinguish with my blurred sight. When the lion walked past the others by Eutychia’s side, I was surprised that he hadn’t stormed in and ripped all to pieces. His tense body had stopped in the doorway as they passed the control room and his orange glowing eyes were fixed on Kora without her noticing, when everyone broke out a panic. The lion was only a metre away from her back, and with just a touch of his claws on her back he could damage her for life or even kill her. But he just stared and then passed her.

  To feed oblivion with decay of things,

  To blot old books and alter their contents,

  To pluck the quills from ancient ravens’ wings,

  To dry the old oak’s sap and cherish springs,

  To spoil antiquities of hammer’d steel,

  And turn the giddy round of fortune’s wheel;

  To show the beldam daughters of her daughter,

  Tarus’s voice spoke the words, but he was becoming more and more stressed so he backed off a little to gain time. Hakon had calculated everything, seen everything, and what happened was meant to be. The drink wouldn’t work without being near a tame lion, and now it was here, no more than three metres away from me. The glass bottle, in which Tarus had yet to replace the cork, was ripped out of his hands and floated through the air to land in the older man’s hand.

  “Merlin, you’re still alive? Why are you here and why is Eutychia here with you?” asked Kora rhetorically through the glass.

  “If you’re together…Eutychia must be…Leo’s mother,” stammered Gabriel when he realised the dilemma. They weren’t just the two most evil people out of the seven worlds; they couldn’t even be touched because they were our hero’s parents. Though, if it was up to Leo he wouldn’t be upset at all if they disappeared. He hated them just as much as the rest of us, but that was before he had known Eutychia was his mother. This information would make him very upset.

  “That’s why you always surrendered in a battle with Leo, not because you were afraid, as we thought, but because he’s your son. You have a little ounce of decency in your body, after all,” commented Michael as an echo of what had already run through everyone’s thoughts.

  To make the child a man, the man a child,

  To slay the tiger that doth live by slaughter,

  To tame the unicorn and lion wild,

  To mock the subtle in themeselves beguiled,

  Tarus continued rapidly, but stopped abruptly before the last final verse when he saw Merlin greedily swallow down half of the drink that was left and give the other half to Eutychia.

  “No!” shouted Kora and Gabriel.

  I could simultaneously feel that the souls around me understood what Merlin had planned, but I couldn’t see anything anymore. My eyes were completely closed, my mind began to float away and I was finding it hard to concentrate.

  “No, Merlin, you can’t! It’s too dangerous. The worlds have no place for an evil descendant,” cried Gabriel. “Tarus, get Eutychia out of the room before they plant Susy’s embryo into herself with the ‘transfer energy’ spell. They plan to create an invincibly powerful child from Susy and Merlin. It would become the most powerful combination ever created. In their hands, it could mean the end of the Universe’s peace. That must not happen,” he continued angrily in a voice that was differ
ent from the humble tone I had always heard before.

  The lion and the tiger that Tarus had transformed himself into crashed together in one tremendously angry fight. I heard a couple of dozen frantic knockings on the door. The remaining individuals of the group seemed to have been locked out of the small room. The last thing I heard was Eutychia’s completion of the spell.

  To cheer the plowman with increaseful crops,

  And waste huge stones with little water drops.

  The pain disappeared from my body as well as any desire for everything and everyone. My existence ceased without relation to anything previously seen, heard, tasted, felt or smelt. My life was played as a slide show in my thoughts from the seven worlds’ creation, when I was a significantly younger girl with bright golden curls bouncing as I ran, to the secret heart, my first meeting with Noah, my family, my friends, the dinosaurs’ extinction, the great flood, Leo’s protective spell over Pixi, my son and grandson, my kidnapping, Villhelm’s stories, Lance, the war and lastly the intimate night with Tarus. All my apathy, wrath, gluttony, hubris, lust, desire and envy as well as all my joy ended and my almost non-existent consciousness slipped into a peace where all I could do in the Universe had been done. I could hear a high pitched audio notification from the machine next to me slowly dwindle ‘Beep…’ My body was abandoned by my soul, causing it to collapse and force out my last breath. My last thought was: ‘Everything turns out as it should in the end.’
