Cade checked for shells and swatted her behind to get her moving faster. When the door was closed, he went out into the hall. He wasn’t sure who was more surprised—him seeing Kaye as she got to the top of the stairs or Kaye seeing him without a stitch of clothing, an erection forming from the adrenaline surging through his body, and pointing a shotgun at her.
“Cade? Oh, my God, does Halley know? What a stupid question! Of course Halley knows; why else would you be naked coming out of her room!” Kaye started to laugh.
Cade dashed back into their room to see Halley collapsing in gales of laughter on their bed. She only laughed harder when she saw his hard-on. Before Cade could deal with her, there was a discreet knock on the door.
“Should I come back?” Kaye called.
“Oh, hell no, Kaye! Come on in and rip your clothes off... we’ll have a party,” laughed Halley, who was making little to no effort to contain her amusement.
“You do, and Charlie will tan your hide. You go back downstairs; we’ll be with you in a few moments.” He waited until he could hear Kaye in retreat. “You knew,” he accused Halley.
“I figured. I would have given anything to see that,” Halley said gleefully.
He shook his finger at her. Cade retrieved his jeans and a sweater from the side of the bed and put them on. “Get yourself dressed and we will go down and join Kaye.”
He sat down, pulling on his moccasins. He looked up to see tears once more falling from her eyes. He got up and gently pulled her to him, wrapping her in his arms.
She hugged him close. “I never thought I’d see you do that again.”
“Get dressed?”
She looked up at him and grinned. “No, stuff your hard cock into a pair of pants.”
He groaned and swatted her more with affection than anything else. Suddenly it caught his eye. There on her finger was his mother’s ring. The ring he had placed on her finger when she had agreed to be his.
She caught his eye. “You warned me there would be dire consequences if I ever took it off.”
He lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it tenderly.
“And there will be. You get dressed before I decide Kaye can wait until I’ve dealt with your unruly behavior and the resulting arousal it creates for both of us.”
Halley slung her arms around his neck and kissed him before disappearing into the closet to grab a pair of leggings and a light silk sweater. They went to join Kaye, who they could hear in the kitchen. In the distance, they could hear a siren.
Kaye looked out over the island. “I called Charlie. I knew he’d want to know.”
“Thank God, I’m not sure I’m up to dealing with the two of you on my own,” said Cade with a smile.
“I don’t know, you didn’t seem to have any problem with me this morning,” said Halley with a sigh.
“I’ll bet,” quipped Kaye.
“And I’ll remind both of you to behave yourself else I leave Kaye in Charlie’s capable hands and take Halley upstairs to take her to task for her naughty behavior since I’ve been gone.”
“I gotta tell you, buddy, she’s way overdue...” said Charlie as he entered the house and embraced Cade with unashamed affection. “And you owe me a beer for keeping her from getting arrested.”
“The federal agent?” Cade queried. Charlie nodded. “She’s already called to apologize.”
“I’m surprised you got her to do that. She was pretty insistent that the hell would freeze over and she and Kaye would go ice skating before that ever happened.”
“I didn’t give her much choice, did I, sweetheart?”
“Kaye?” Halley said to her friend.
“Yeah?”
“We have got to nip this bromance in the bud.”
Kaye giggled. “I absolutely agree. Hal?”
“Yeah?”
“I take it we’re not going for pedicures today.”
Halley grinned at her. “No, I think I have other more important things to do.”
“Not to mention far more pleasurable,” laughed Kaye.
“Kaye!” admonished Charlie.
The four sat down for breakfast and Cade relayed his story to Charlie and Kaye.
“But you’re all right?” asked Kaye. “So it won’t be a problem if you stay here in Colorado?”
Before Cade could answer, Charlie did so. “I’m afraid it is. Shit, Cade, I thought you were dead. A lot of questions came up about who you were and that there was no record of you anywhere. I didn’t think it mattered, so we all just played dumb. I don’t think it’s safe for you here. Because a lot of that money was from the Middle East, Homeland Security has gotten involved and those boys don’t like any untied strings.”
“It’s all right, Charlie. There was no way for you to know. And I’m sure you pushed off anything they could have laid at Halley’s feet onto me... which is exactly what you should have done.”
Charlie nodded. “I’m afraid so. You are a person of interest in all of this. We made sure the description we gave them was off so I doubt you’d be recognized any place outside of this part of Colorado. We probably should get you out of here as soon as possible. Could you go back to your place up in the mountains?”
Cade turned to see Halley blush. “I’m afraid someone ensured that would never be possible again.” He reached for her hand and kissed the back of it. “She too was trying to protect me. Is there even any wilderness left?”
“Alaska?” offered Kaye.
“Too far and too hard to get to,” said Halley, thinking. “There are places in Canada, but it might be easier if we stayed in the United States.” Halley used her phone to pull up her personal files. “There’s a place I did a study about grizzlies. Here it is, the Copper Salmon Wilderness up in Oregon. Very isolated; very private. That area right outside the national park is ripe for hunting and fishing. We could easily live off the grid up there for a few years.”
Charlie nodded. “I remember reading about that place. Kaye’s already got ID made for Cade.”
“You do?” asked Halley.
Kaye nodded. “We just thought maybe at some point you’d need it. At least that’s what Charlie told me. What he really wanted was to give me something to do to take my mind off of worrying about you.”
Halley reached for her friend’s hand and squeezed it.
“It wouldn’t fly with the feds who are looking, but it would pass muster for most things. As much as I hate to lose you two, I think you need to get ready and leave today.”
“I think he’s right,” said Cade. “The sooner we’re gone, the safer all of us are. Charlie, if we give you some money, can you go into town and get us some food and supplies? I think we’re better to stay as far away from people as we can.”
“That’s no problem. I can call into the office and tell them we’re concerned about Halley and I’m taking the rest of the day off. Kaye can grab the ID and I’ll get what you need. I’ll give you our camping gear so as to not raise suspicion and then you two need to be packed and ready to go when we return. Won’t take us more than an hour or two. How are you fixed for money?”
“We should be fine. Cade had a stash in the cave and I have that with his other things. And I use one of those online banks so that should be easy. Besides they aren’t looking for me and you can tell them that I decided to pour myself into my work. I can take my laptop. That way we can communicate and I can post some things on the net.”
Having made a plan, the two couples set about getting things ready so that Cade and Halley could get away.
As they watched Kaye and Charlie leave, Cade turned to her. “You’re all right with this? Leaving your life?”
“You are my life. I think you have been since the day you saved me from that cougar. Certainly my grandmother believed that and so do I. You don’t mind being saddled with me forever?”
Cade chuckled. “I keep telling you forever is a long time with a man who has lived two centuries. But yes, Halley Jordan, I will be with you until my l
ast breath.”
Halley sighed as she melded herself against his body and felt his hands cup her bottom gently.
“I’m going to hold you to that, Cade Devereaux.”
