The Christmas Menagerie Page 22

by Minna Howard

The rest of the week passed in a haze. Jules was away for a couple of days on a conference. They managed to spend a few evenings together, though Jules always went back to his uncle’s house by the morning, to be with Dickon.

Amelia decided to give a lunch party on Easter Sunday. Grania and Gus who were staying, helped her, Gus turning out to be a great cook. Giles, Leonora, Jules, Dickon, Ben and Vero all came – Sophie had already left for the US to see Dom. Rufus and Becky were busy with the kennels.

Although it was obvious to the adults that Jules and Amelia were together – ‘so happy for you both’, Vero hugged her when they arrived – Dickon had not been officially told. Jules said he was waiting for the right moment to tell him, and Amelia left it for him to do.

The lunch party was a great success. Amelia decorated the table with flowers and small chocolate eggs in colourful paper. Dickon, having had two helpings of the chocolate mousse, asked if he could leave the table. Halfway off his chair he said, ‘If you want to live with us you can, Amelia, or Dad and I could live with you. You can help me clean out Luna.’

‘That is praise indeed,’ Giles said with a beaming smile. ‘We welcome you with open arms, Amelia.’ He blew her a kiss.

  Jules bent and kissed her.

‘Thank you, Dickon,’ Amelia said, ‘I’d really love to do that.’ She stretched her arms out to him. He came to her and at last, she was able to give him a hug.
