Kotah is the Fae Prime and crowds part when he approaches. We’re soon front and center, looking at two very irate wolves. One beautiful and white. The other, three times the normal size, midnight blue with eerie opal eyes.
We referred to the prince as a demon wolf, but honestly, I don’t know what he is or how he got this way.
A tug on my shirtsleeve brings my attention to Mallory. “I’m sorry, sir. I didn’t mean to upset your mates.”
“Not your fault, my friend. Wow, it’s a heck of a first day for you to manage the portal gate, though.”
He nods. “You promised it would be an exciting change of pace and you were right, sir.”
I chuckle. “It’s been that for sure. Do you have any idea how to calm them down so they’ll shift back? We’re not going to get much sorted out with them snarling and snapping at anyone who comes near them.”
“When my mate and I were Soul Seared, it took weeks until we felt ourselves again.”
Weeks? “Alright, thank you, Mallory.”
Queen Laryssa and the Prima catch up to us and I try to explain the best I can. Neither of them takes it well, so I leave them to freak out and go to Calli. I feel her worry and anxiety so sharply across the mating bond and it hurts me.
“Hey, Spitfire.”
Calli hugs me. “Is everyone caught up?”
“I think so.” I assess the two snarling wolves, Kotah trying to approach, Calli beside herself, Brant trying to talk Doc down, and Jaxx wrangling two dragon wildlings and I’m thankful not to have to take the world on alone anymore.
This is us now. A team. This is our quint.
Kotah
It’s late when Hawk, Brant, and I shed our clothes and crawl onto the foam mattress with Calli and Jaxx. At some point during the day, Lukas found us linens and pillows. Honestly, I’m so tired I wouldn’t have cared if I had to sleep on a stone floor.
“Hey, sweet prince,” Calli says, her voice heavy with sleep. “How’s the latest disaster?”
It took over an hour to calm Keyla and Creed enough to get them into one of the wooden shacks that will soon be temporary housing for fae travelers. It took another hour to talk Doc down from stomping in there and inserting himself into the confusion. The dragon twins are wound up. The queens are freaking out. And all I want to do is curl up with my mates and shut out the world until morning.
“The fires are put out for tonight. Hawk’s people are in place and will let us know if anything changes. I’m scared to death about Keyla, but I can’t think about it anymore.”
“Then you came to the right place, my man,” Jaxx says, reaching over Calli’s hip to caress my waist. There’s no light and no windows, but my wolf’s night vision makes it easy to see. “Consider this a sexy safe zone. No thinking allowed.”
I chuckle as Brant snuggles up behind me and Hawk settles behind Jaxx. Calli runs a gentle touch along my jaw and cups my cheek. “Do you want to sleep or would you prefer some sexual comfort?”
“Is that a real question?”
The guys chuckle.
Calli frowns. “Hey, there’s nothing wrong with being polite and asking. He could be too tired or stressed. It was his first day ruling and a lot happened.”
“You did a great job,” Hawk says, his hand draping casually over Jaxx’s hip and stroking him in a lazy pull. “I’m proud of you, Kotah. We all are.”
“Yes, we are,” Calli says, rolling onto her hip so we’re chest-to-chest. The rounds of her breasts press against the flat planes of mine and I’m struck by the knowledge that my beloved girls are going to grow over the next months. A woman’s breasts grow bigger and fuller in the months of pregnancy. I can hardly wait.
I slide my hand up the bumpy ridges of her ribcage and cup the mound of her breasts. Her nipples are tight and extended and I give them a gentle pinch.
Calli’s head drops back and she groans. “In honor of your successes, you rule the hour, sweet prince. What would you like to do? Any ideas?”
“Decisions. Decisions. Where to begin.”
Jaxx
If you’ve ever lived through a chain of events where one thing after another goes off the rails and you wonder what’s happening around you, why, and when it will stop so you can catch your breath, then you know what I mean when I say…
Life is crazy.
Three months ago, the universe sucker-punched the five of us. Yeah, we took more than a few hits, but we fought to keep ahead of the storm.
Now, it’s happening again… this time to Keyla.
As a male who’s always had a passion for life, for love, and the world around me, I never expected I’d be named a guardian of a mythical firebird, have four hot and amazing mates, and end up with a baby on the way.
Somehow, life gives you everything you never knew you needed. I only hope Keyla is as fortunate… and Doc.
Poor Doc.
But there’s no telling. Like I said… life is crazy.
Three months ago Calli died on the graveled shoulder on the side of the road.
It was the end and the beginning.
Because that’s when our lives truly began.
