  DNI—Director of National Intelligence, American executive in charge of all intelligence agencies

  GRU—Glavnoje Razvedyvatel’noje Upravlenije, Russian military intelligence

  HUD—Heads-Up Display, a system that displays flight and weapons information so a pilot does not have to look down to read it

  JBER—abbreviation for Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, American military installation near Anchorage, Alaska

  JCS—Joint Chiefs of Staff, the senior uniformed leaders of the six branches of the American military

  MILES—Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System, a “laser tag” infantry training system

  NORAD—North American Aerospace Defense Command, the joint American-Canadian command that directs air defense of North America

  RAOC—Regional Air Operations Center, a U.S. Air Force unit that directs airborne air defense activities

  RCAF—Royal Canadian Air Force

  RCS—radar cross-section, a value relating to an object being detected by radar

  RWR—radar warning receiver, a device that detects and classifies radar energy

  SecDef—abbreviation for the American secretary of defense

  SIGINT—Signals Intelligence, the process of obtaining, identifying, and disseminating radio signals

  SVR—Sluzhba Vneshney Razvedki, Russian Foreign Intelligence Service
