“You’re a Great One,” Goldman said.

The man laughed. “Thanks? Listen, you two can come out now. The Loyalty Guard is dead.”

Goldman helped Lilli up and they exited together. There were bodies strewn around the clearing. Half of the squad that had come with them were injured or dead. The others tended to the injured. In the middle of the space were three more strangers, all female.

“I told you what would happen to you if you went out there,” Goldman said to Sims. “You people keep underestimating Weber. Over and over. And I’ve seen where that leads, whether or not you want to believe it.”

“Maybe you’re right,” Sims said. “I just don’t know anymore.”

They gathered in the center with the other people Goldman figured must be Great Ones. The original Great Ones. He found himself in awe.

“Who are you people?” Sims asked when they had all gathered in the middle.

“I’m Clara and this is Reby,” one of the women said. She took the hand of the one named Reby and squeezed it. “Just glad we could help you all.”

  “Bella,” the other woman said.

The man stuck his hand out to Sims, who shook it. “I’m Mac,” he said.

Goldman felt a chill run through him. “Mac and Bella Mansfield,” he said.

“How do you know us?” Bella asked.

“There’s a lot these two know,” Sims said. “I’d say it’s hard to believe, but maybe it won’t be for you.”

Mac nodded. “We’re no strangers to unusual things. I guess you’ve seen what we can do. You all are with the United States?”

“That’s right,” Sims said. “We are here at the request of President Henry Rowan. We want to recruit you to help us against the CSA and Wolfgang Weber.”

Mac sighed. “I knew someone would come for us eventually. Look, we were happy to help in this fight, and I’m really glad we were there to save whoever we could. We’re no fans of the Loyalty Guard, but we just want to live in peace. We didn’t ask for anything in this world, and since we can’t go home, we’d like to keep to ourselves, not interacting with anyone, not asking anything of anyone.”

“We need you,” Goldman said. “In the US headquarters that we came from is a man from the future named Nathaniel Mansfield. He’s your descendant, and he’s dying because of what’s happened to this world…what might still happen.”

Mac looked shocked. He looked at Bella, who seemed just as surprised as he did. “Well,” he said, “I guess we have a lot to discuss after all.”
