Savage Lake Page 9

Thinking of renovations, my mind drifted to the basement.

Dawkins who had wandered into the room with a glass of lemonade and a bag of chips, sat down beside me and said, “What are you thinking about?”

  I blinked. “Nothing.”

  He raised his brows.

“You always tell me I’m a magnet for trouble,” he said, “but seems to me that you’re just as bad. I’ve seen you deal with two cases and the first turned into a car chase while the second nearly got you killed.”

“Fair enough,” I said. “We make quite a pair.”

“That we do,” Dawkins replied. He got this odd sort of gleam in his eyes, and then he leaned over, and his lips brushed against mine. “Guess you’ll just have to keep me around.”

My heart beat against my chest and palms started to sweat. “Guess I will,” I said, mumbling a bit.

Dawkins brought his hand up and carefully tucked some of my hair behind my ear. His thumb grazed my cheekbone. “I just worry about you, you know.”

I did know and now I got it, but I wasn’t completely ready to admit that to him. “If you’ll remember, when I was first thinking of moving up here, you got yourself kidnapped by a bunch of hillbillies.”

Dawkins chuckled. “All right. Fair. But I can be allowed to worry, a little bit?”

I nodded. “Yeah, I guess you can.” I moved closer, so my lips were only a breath away from his.

“And can I keep taking you out to dinner?” he murmured.

  I nodded. “You definitely can…”

“And?” He leaned in a bit more.

“And… we can watch some more movies.”

  “I like movies.”

  I smiled. “But good movies.”

“Of course,” he agreed, weaving his fingers through my hair and massaging my scalp.

I placed my hands on his chest. “Dawkins?”

  “Yes?”

“Are you going to freaking kiss me or what?”
