  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Bringing a book to life is not a solo endeavor—or even a duo endeavor, in our case.

We could not have done this without the help of Keith Kahla and the entire team at St. Martin’s Press. This was definitely easier the second time around.

Although The Pandora Deception is a work of fiction, we drew on many resources to try to get the descriptions right, including Richard Preston’s The Hot Zone, and Epidemic by Reid Wilson. Both of these books provide detailed (and terrifying) insights into the Ebola virus and how epidemics are contained.

A big measure of gratitude goes out to our early readers and technical advisers, including Jennifer Schumacher, Joe Chihade, Doug Baden, Shemi Hart, Rick Campbell, Paul “Nuke” Tibbets, Tom Cappelletti, and Alex Bruns.

To our USNA alumni supporters who have been there since the very beginning, especially Chip Sharratt ’74, Alex Plechash ’75, and Chris Bentley ’79, we thank you. You have been with us as readers and friends since before the first book.

To our wives, Christine and Melissa, thanks for putting up with this third career dream we’ve cobbled together.

Lastly, we need to thank the United States Navy. We are privileged to have attended the greatest service academy in the world and to have served our country in the finest navy on the planet. It is no exaggeration to say that without the Naval Academy, this book would not exist.
