by Nicholas Walsh

He shouts to himself, ‘Oh, stuff it!’

He then takes a piece of paper, holds it, reads it, ‘“I’m a mysterious person who wears the mysterious coat.”’ He repeats reading the same note quietly, rehearsing it many times.

At Dr Airhardt’s office kitchen, Leo and Roy are sitting on the chairs near the table and drinking two cups of coffee, and then Dr Airhardt enters after returning from the siege at the outside of the Duke of York Hotel and from visiting the coat shop.

Leo says to him, ‘Thank God you’re here, Doctor.’

‘Yeah, it’s good to see you back, Doctor,’ says Roy.

  ‘Thank you,’ says Dr Airhardt.

  ‘What happened?’ says Leo.

‘Robert Taylor is out of control,’ says Dr Airhardt.

‘What’s he done?’ says Roy. ‘Selling weapons to the underworld?’

‘No, he escaped from police custody at the police station in St Kilda Road after his name was announced as the person who wears the mysterious coat,’ says Dr Airhardt.

‘What has happened to Robert Taylor?’ says Leo.

‘Yeah, Doctor, what has happened to that bloke who is a criminal?’ says Roy.

‘He turned crazy when he heard his name was announced. He hit a policeman using the same policeman’s baton, stole this policeman’s gun, and escaped from both the police cell and the police station,’ says Dr Airhardt. ‘Now he’s on the run from the police station. He’s killed four people; two in Southbank and two in St Kilda. He also stole money from his three shooting victims, and stole a cash register machine from the firearms’ store in St Kilda. He then stole a car from his second shooting victim and stole two weapons, a 9mm semi-automatic high-powered rifle, and a shotgun at the firearms’ store.’

‘What’s next for Robert during his escape, Doctor?’ says Leo.

‘He then had a shootout against two security guards of the Duke of York Hotel in Fritzeg Street. When the two security guards escaped and survived, Robert then entered the same hotel and seeing the hotel was empty, he locked the hotel’s door and stopped his killings. But his escape is not over yet. He’s feeling alone in the hotel and now becoming lonely,’ says Dr Airhardt.

  ‘Stupid bugger,’ says Roy.

‘Yes,’ says Dr Airhardt. ‘He’s got depression, I think. He wants to take the people hostage when he’s taking over the Duke of York Hotel.’

‘Did you contact him?’ says Leo.

‘Using the telephone at the hotel, he contacted me on my mobile phone, because he wanted me to find out about the coat shop; the same coat shop where he bought the mysterious coat a long time ago in Fritzeg Street. So I visited it,’ says Dr Airhardt.

‘So what are you going to do if you come back to Fritzeg Street tomorrow to see how Robert is going at the Duke of York Hotel?’ says Leo.

‘Look, the police tried to get him,’ says Dr Airhardt. ‘They also tried to help him because Robert doesn’t want to see the media because he’s also a shy person.’

Leo says to Dr Airhardt, ‘What are the police are going to do about Robert tomorrow?’

‘I don’t know what they’re doing about Robert tomorrow,’ says Dr Airhardt. ‘They’re haven’t decided yet, and they have no idea about how to bring Robert to justice again.’

‘Hey, calm down, Doctor,’ says Leo. ‘I’m trying to help you.’

‘Yeah, me too, I’m also trying to help you,’ says Roy.

‘I don’t care. What the bloody hell am I’m going to do about the Robert Taylor crisis now?’ says Dr Airhardt. ‘It’s pathetic.’ He turns around, thinking.

  Leo says to him, ‘Doctor?’

‘Mate, just ignore him,’ says Roy. ‘He’s no good, fair go.’

‘Can I talk to him later?’ says Leo.

‘Not now, mate,’ says Roy. ‘Just wait until he calms down a bit and relaxes.’

Just then, the receptionist enters with a piece of paper with the details of clients. She gives it to him. She says, ‘Here you go, Doctor.’

‘Thank you,’ says Dr Airhardt, so the receptionist exits again Dr Airhardt reads the piece of paper which has a married couple’s details. It is about their marriage problems so he stop reading, turns back around and says to Leo and Roy, ‘If you excuse me, gentlemen, I’m going to my office to interview a married couple who are having their marriage problems. It’s about a wife who is having an affair with a younger man who is her gardener and this makes her husband jealous when he’s away for work.’

‘Is this is The Graduate, Doctor?’ says Leo.

‘No, Leo,’ says Dr Airhardt. ‘It’s only just a normal love affair, not trashy and raunchy.’

‘Does the wife look like Stifler’s mum from American Pie?’ says Roy.

‘Don’t be silly, Roy,’ says Dr Airhardt. ‘If you don’t mind.’

So Dr Airhardt exits from the kitchen as he’s going back to his normal duty as a psychiatrist. He goes to his office and interviews the couple who are having marriage problems.

At a cafe in Fritzeg Street, Inspector Mack Young, Detective Sergeant Nick Baxter and Constable Troy Williamson are sitting on the chairs and having a cup of coffee. Mack has finished drinking his cup of coffee and puts his cup on a table and says to both Nick and Troy, ‘All right, gentlemen. It’s time for a talk.’

Both Nick and Troy finish drinking their cups of coffee and put their cups on a table and Nick says, ‘Okay, what is this going to be about?’

‘Yeah, Inspector, tell us,’ says Troy.

‘It’s going to be about,’ Mack takes a long pause, ‘capturing Robert Taylor again tomorrow.’

‘What should we do to capture Robert again tomorrow, Inspector?’ says Nick.

‘We’re going to bring across a Special Forces team and then, get them to capture him again,’ says Mack.

‘Can they enter into the front of the Duke of York Hotel or could they come into the back of the same hotel?’ asks Troy.

‘Well, we can put some of the members entering into the front of the Duke of York Hotel, and some of the members can go around and into the back,’ replies Mack.

‘What’s Robert going to do tomorrow?’ asks Nick.

  ‘I don’t know,’ replies Mack.

‘What’s next for Robert? Doing nothing?’ asks Troy.

‘Well, he hasn’t decided yet,’ says Mack. ‘So, gentlemen, what do you think of my plan for tomorrow?’

  ‘I agree,’ says Nick.

  ‘Me too,’ says Troy.

‘All right, let’s do it tomorrow,’ says Mack.

  CHAPTER 40

  T

hat night at Tyler’s apartment block, he and Angelique are having a romantic interlude and next to the table is a bottle of champagne in an ice bucket. When Tyler takes a break from eating, he says to Angelique, ‘Are you all right, Angelique?’

‘Yes, I’m okay,’ says Angelique as she also takes a break from eating.

‘Is there something I can do for you?’ says Tyler.

‘I don’t know, Tyler,’ says Angelique. ‘I’m sorry.’

‘You don’t know?’ says Tyler. ‘Come on, Angelique, you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met in my life and I want you to be my beautiful wife in just a few months.’

‘Yes, Tyler,’ says Angelique. ‘I am beautiful.’

‘So, how about having some fun?’ says Tyler. ‘I want you to have fun with me.’

‘Yeah, I’ll do it,’ says Angelique.

  ‘Good,’ says Tyler.

‘So what should I do for you?’ says Angelique.

‘I want you to perform a sexy erotic striptease dance for me in the lounge room after dinner. You’re a dancer and you have brilliant dancing performances at the Duke of York Hotel. I want you to do it for me like Kim Basinger did in Nine and a Half Weeks,’ says Tyler. ‘It’ll make me very happy.’

‘All right, I’ll do it for you,’ says Angelique. Tyler stands up from the table and walks to the ice bucket to take the champagne out of the bucket, b
ut Angelique says to him, ‘Tyler, I have a question for you.’

‘What is it, Angelique?’ says Tyler.

‘Did you have other girlfriends before you met me a long time ago?’ says Angelique.

‘I didn’t have other girlfriends before,’ says Tyler.

  ‘Damn!’ says Angelique.

‘Did you have other boyfriends before we met and have you been romanced before?’ says Tyler.

‘Well, I haven’t been romanced before and I haven’t had other boyfriends before,’ says Angelique.

  ‘Why?’ says Tyler.

‘Because I was very busy with both my dancing and lingerie modelling work, but when I finished working, I went to the bars with my friends and I tried to talk to all of the guys but they were not interested in my private work and they ignored me,’ says Angelique.

  ‘Why?’ says Tyler.

‘Because they think I was a busy girl,’ says Angelique.

‘Oh, that’s a pity,’ says Tyler, so he takes the bottle of champagne out of the ice bucket, walks to the table, pops the cork and pours her glass and his glass too. Tyler sits down on the chair and says to Angelique, ‘I know you tried your luck meeting some guys before but now I’ve met you, you’re a perfect match for me so … I love you.’

‘Thanks, Tyler,’ says Angelique. ‘You’re such a gentleman.’

‘Why thank you,’ says Tyler. ‘Cheers.’

He and Angelique click their glasses and sip the champagne.

At Fritzeg Street, Inspector Mack Young, Detective Sergeant Nick Baxter and Constable Troy Williamson are standing near the footpath of the left side of the road, while a group of policemen are standing on the road.

Mack is addressing them and says, ‘All right, men, tomorrow, we’ve gotta try again to capture Robert Taylor at the Duke of York Hotel by using the Task Force.’

‘But, Inspector,’ says an uniformed policeman, ‘we’re working for the force, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and fifty-two weeks a year, you can’t do that.’

‘Look, forget it and just get over it. Let’s go,’ says Mack.

He, Detective Sergeant Nick Baxter, Constable Troy Williamson and a group of policemen are packing up as they’re going to try again for tomorrow on the road of Fritzeg Street but inside the Duke of York Hotel, Robert is watching them leave. He turns around and says to himself, ‘I think I’m going to have a drink.’ He walks to the bar to get all the bottles of alcoholic drinks in the main room. Then after the main bar, he walks to the bistro to get all the bottles of the same drinks in the same room.

He walks through each room, collecting all the bottles of the same drinks. A bit later at the main bar, all of the alcoholic drinks are here in the same room. There are beers, wines, spirits, whiskeys, vodkas, champagnes, ports, and more. Robert looks at all of the alcoholic drinks on the tables and says to himself, ‘Well, this is it. It’s time to have a drink and get pissed because I hate my life.’

He walks to the bar, takes a glass from a bar and walks to one of the tables which has beers, sits down on a stool, opens one of the bottles of beer, pours it in a glass and holds the glass of beer in his right hand, and a piece of paper in his left hand which says, ‘I’m the mysterious person who wears the mysterious coat.’

He drinks a glass of beer when he stops reading and then starts to drink all of the alcoholic drinks, just like a lonely drunk.

At Tyler’s apartment block, he is sitting on the couch. Angelique walks in wearing a long coat and underneath, black sexy lacy underwear with fishnet stockings and high heels. ‘Tyler?’

  ‘Yes, Angelique?’ says Tyler.

‘Do you have a CD as I’m going to get ready to perform a dance for you,’ says Angelique.

‘Well, I have Air Supply, the Divinyls and U2 in my music collection but it’s hard to choose one for you,’ says Tyler.

‘Don’t worry, I’ll get it for you,’ says Angelique.

‘Whatever,’ says Tyler, so Angelique walks to the door, opens the door and exits. Tyler takes his tie, suit, shirt, shoes and socks off but in the hallway, Angelique walks to one of the rooms of the apartment block four doors from Tyler’s room and knocks. The door opens and it’s a man with a Billabong T-shirt and Levi jeans, so he says to Angelique, ‘Yes?’

‘Hi, my name is Angelique. Do you have a CD as I’m going to get ready to perform a dance for my fiancée,’ says Angelique.

‘I’ll get it,’ says the man, so he leaves to get a CD for Angelique and she waits. A minute later, the man with a CD in his hand returns, gives it to her and says, ‘Here you go, Angelique.’

‘Thanks,’ says Angelique. She looks at the CD and the name of the CD is Shirley Bassey: Greatest Hits and then, she also looks at the back cover of the same CD which had a track list but she stops looking at this CD.

‘It’s called Shirley Bassey: Greatest Hits,’ says the man. ‘It’s an oldies CD, and it’s got Big Spender.’

  ‘I’m a dancer,’ says Angelique.

‘Oh, where do you work at?’ says the man.

‘The Duke of York Hotel,’ says Angelique.

‘Yeah, I remember I’ve been to this place with my mates and we saw you doing exotic table-top dancing in a secret room last year,’ says the man.

  ‘That’s right,’ says Angelique.

‘And then, I paid you for a private lap dance for myself,’ says a man.

  ‘Yes, I remember,’ says Angelique.

‘So what are you doing now?’ says the man.

‘I’m going to get married to Tyler soon,’ says Angelique.

‘Well, good luck to you,’ says the man. ‘Umm, don’t forget to give my CD back to me when you’re finished dancing for your fiancée, okay? Goodbye.’

The man shuts the door while Angelique with the CD in her hand walks back to Tyler’s room to get ready to perform a sexy erotic striptease dance for him.

After midnight at the Duke of York Hotel, all of the bottles of alcoholic drinks are empty and on the floor. It’s a mess but Robert is still sitting on a stool, next to a table and pouring the last bottle of alcoholic drink in a glass. He says himself, ‘Last one.’ He puts the last bottle of alcoholic drink on the table and after he finishes drinking, he throws the glass into the air and smashes it into the wall and says himself, ‘Aaaahhhhh!’

He is now drunk, so he stands up and walks to the men’s toilet to vomit and urinate. After his vomit finishes, he shouts to himself, ‘Oh my God!’ He flushes the toilet again and leaves the toilet but suddenly, he walks to the urinal and drunkenly unzips his unwashed jeans and urinates for the last time. He loudly shouts to himself again, ‘Ohhhhh yeeeeaaaaahhhhhh!’

He walks to the door, opens the door, exits and shuts the door without washing his hands again. At the main bar, Robert enters but he feels strange and says his upcoming last words again, ‘I’m the mysterious person who wears the mysterious coat.’

Then suddenly, he collapses on the floor and falls asleep.

  CHAPTER 41

  T

he next morning at Tyler’s apartment block, he and Angelique are having a sleep-in as they are tired.

There’s a knock on the door and both Tyler and Angelique open their eyes and wake up.

  Tyler says, ‘Huh?’

  ‘What was that?’ says Angelique.

‘It must be someone,’ says Tyler. ‘Let’s go.’

He and Angelique get out of his bed, grabbing their dressing gowns and they both walk to the lounge room door. Tyler opens the door and Peter is standing there with a newspaper in his hand.

Tyler says, ‘Oh, it’s you, Peter!’

‘G’day, Tyler. G’day, Angelique,’ says Peter.

‘What do you want us for?’ says Angelique.

‘I’m just visiting you and Tyler to see how you and he are going,’ says Peter.

‘Any news about Robert Taylor in the Duke of York Hotel?’ says Tyler.

‘Yes,’ says Peter. ‘When I was watching The Breakfast Show, there was
a report about the police going to use the Special Forces team to enter the Duke of York Hotel and recapture Robert. We don’t want him to go out of control when he sees the force or the people who have been involved with him as a mysterious person with the mysterious coat. I have got a newspaper article about Robert’s escape from the police station, his massacre, his shootout against two security guards of the Duke of York Hotel and his siege at the same hotel without hostages. You can both read this article and check it out for yourselves.’

Peter gives the newspaper to Tyler and so Tyler and Angelique read the newspaper and they see four photos: a photo of the open door of the police cell where Robert assaulted Constable Troy Williamson using Troy’s baton and then escaping from the police station, a photo of the dead body of Robert’s first shooting victim, another photo of the two security guards being interviewed by the media after their shootout against Robert, and the last photo taken outside of the Duke of York Hotel where a group of policemen are waiting for Robert to surrender from the siege without hostages.

In this newspaper, an article on the front page with a headline says:

  ESCAPE, MASSACRE, SHOOT-OUT AND SIEGE:

  MELBOURNE AND ST KILDA SHOCKED.

  Tyler says, ‘Oh my God!’

  ‘That’s terrible,’ says Angelique.

‘Yes, it’s a shocker,’ says Peter. ‘We survived Robert but sadly, some didn’t.’

‘Yes, the people were distressed and upset about how Robert has gone crazy and killed innocent people before taking over the Duke of York Hotel,’ says Angelique. ‘It’s scary.’

  ‘It’s shocking,’ Peter says.

Tyler stops reading the newspaper, gives it back to Peter.

‘You were lucky that Robert didn’t catch you investigating his secret hideout which had his weapons in it,’ says Peter.

‘Yes,’ says Tyler. ‘I could have been taken hostage or I could have been killed but I am okay.’

  ‘That’s right,’ says Peter.
