Gemini- The Beginning Of The End Page 30

by Nathan Dickeson

  No.

Any second and someone might stop her. Gingerly she grasped the handle and pulled. A blast of warm air greeted her. Taking one hesitant step after another Sam walked out into the world. Her father said the streets were noisy and filled with people. But tonight, they were empty. Rushing over to an alley she hid in the shadows.

Now what genius? she thought. You’ve never seen the outside, how are you supposed to escape?

She felt a slight tug on her rags. Looking down she didn’t see anything. Again, Sam felt the tug, harder this time. Deciding to follow she let it pull her this way and that. It led her through the city, but then, it stopped. Looking around she waited. A shadow glided along the ground. She watched it glide across the open space to a small dock, with a single ship tied to it. At least that is what she guessed they were. For some reason, she’d always pictured them differently. The sound of voices echoed from behind. Running she followed the shadow. Climbing aboard, she looked around. Not seeing the shadow, she went below, found a barrel and hid.

The sway of the ship and lack of water made Sam nauseous. Deciding to risk it, she poked her head out. There was nothing but dark.

  Good, no light, no people.

Lifting the lid, she climbed out.

“Ya know,” a man with a deep voice said. “You lasted longer than I thought you would.”

Sam squeaked. Her heart was taking a hammer to her chest! A ball of light appeared in the air, revealing a young man with blue eyes and spiky brown hair.

“Hi there,” he said. “My name’s Rick.”
