Chapter One
Dennis Osborne ducked his head and lifted his arms, trying to protect himself against the sandstorm. The rust-colored dirt swirled around, pelting Dennis from every direction, covering him from head to toe. Dennis groaned in anguish. This was his introduction to the scorching-hot desert planet of Noglion.
As they walked, Dennis tried to breathe, but it was nearly impossible. He panted, unable to pull a full breath of air into his lungs. In front of him, he couldn’t see anything. Noglion looked as if it were just a dry, lifeless planet. Behind him, the Noglion starship sat motionless on the desert floor. The metal beast stood, unaffected by the storm.
In truth, Dennis wasn’t sure how much farther he could go. The extreme heat stole all of his energy, making him feel sluggish. Still, Dennis pushed forward, following the Noglion males. Eventually, they ended up in a cave. It was dim and spacious, fitting their entire group. Dennis blinked slowly, waiting for his eyes to adjust. When he could see clearly, Dennis brushed off his clothes and ran a hand through his short brown hair, shaking off a layer of rust-colored dust and dirt.
Commander Gru Poez’iq, the Noglion ship commander, pressed his hand against a pad beside a metal door, and several locks disengaged. There was a hiss, and the door opened, exposing rough rock walls leading to a passageway. When Dennis stepped into the tunnel, he glanced around. Metal sconces lined the walls, lighting a pathway that stretched as far as the eye could see.
Dennis fell into step beside Eric Wilson, the only other human. As they walked, moving at a downward angle, the temperature changed slightly, making it easier for him to cope with the heat. The deeper they went, the easier it was to breathe.
“Fuck,” Dennis muttered as he wiped the sweat from his brow, smearing dirt across his face. “It’s so damn hot.”
Beside him, Eric nodded in agreement.
They moved together, one large group, striding down the endless tunnel. The passageway seemed to go on for miles. When they finally stepped out of the long shaft, a city spread throughout a massive layered cavern. From what he could see, the entire planet was carved from the same rust-colored stone that covered his clothes. As Dennis looked around, he realized that the planet of Noglion was similar to Glecerus in that the city was located beneath the surface.
Dennis watched as Eric wandered close to the edge of the precipice. He kept his eyes on the other human, watching Eric. Commander Gru stayed by Eric’s side. Dennis wasn’t sure what was going on between the two men, but they already seemed close. He’d noticed it on the starship.
“Welcome back, Commander Poez’iq,” a male said, joining them. “Word has gotten around that you acquired two humans while on your mission.”
The commander nodded in response.
“It’s been announced, and there will be a battle soon. But first, please escort the human named Eric to the arena waiting room. The king’s mate is waiting to speak with him.”
Dennis glanced at Eric.
“And the other human, Dennis.” The male looked directly at him. “You can follow me.”
“Yes, sir,” Gru answered without question.
All of a sudden, Dennis’s world started to spin. He was terrified. Dennis didn’t want to be left alone with a stranger. He wanted to stay with Eric.
“Wait!” Dennis shouted. He reached out and grabbed Eric, wrapping his arms around the other man. “I don’t want to leave your side. I’m scared,” he admitted.
Eric patted Dennis’s back as if trying to comfort him. It was a nice gesture, but it did little to help. Eric didn’t seem worried at all. In fact, he was calm. The other human had been composed and relaxed throughout this whole ordeal.
“They aren’t going to hurt you,” Eric whispered. “I promise. Trust me. Nobody is going to hurt you.”
“I don’t think I can do this.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’ve never…” He paused, unable to finish
his sentence.
“You’ve never…” Eric repeated, coaxing him to continue.
Dennis didn’t have a lot of time to talk with Eric, so he blurted out, “I’ve never been with a guy before.”
Eric leaned back and looked him in the eye. The other man smiled gently. “Tell them that. Whoever ends up being your mate, tell him the truth. I know he’ll be gentle with you.”
Dennis nodded.
He didn’t want to leave Eric’s side, but it didn’t seem as though he had much choice. Taking a deep breath to steel his nerves, Dennis turned away from his only friend. Up to this point, Dennis had Eric. But now, he was alone and surrounded by humanoid-looking alien males. Dennis didn’t know what would happen to him. He didn’t know what these Noglions would do to him. Dennis had heard rumors about Noglion.
The scariest of which had him naked, wearing a collar and leash and being dragged around as if he were some sort of animal.
Dennis never expected to end up on this planet. In truth, he thought he would be staying on Glecerus. But it seemed as though fate had other plans for him.
Dennis had volunteered to leave Earth because he was finally ready, to be honest with himself. It took a long time for Dennis to come to terms and accept who he truly was and what he really wanted. He was choosing happiness over society’s expectations. Dennis didn’t want to be stuck in a relationship with someone he didn’t love, so he’d left Earth to start over.
The Noglion male Dennis was following looked like the others of his race. They were enormous, humanoid-looking aliens. Their bodies were thickly muscled and massive, and they were all tall. Each stood at nearly seven feet and wore tan-colored loincloths, brown leather sandals that laced up their thick calves, and there were bronze bands wrapped tightly around their muscular biceps. Their skin looked as though it were covered in scales, from the top of their bald heads down to their feet.
The scales on each male were different, the diamond-shaped markings in various colors of greenish-gray, olive green, and tones of brown. Their massive muscles were on full display. And their eyes were yellow with thin elliptical-shaped pupils and bony brow ridges, pronounced and sticking out. But the most frightening thing about the Noglion males was their claw-tipped hands. The nails looked like sharp blades.
When the male reached a closed door, he placed his hand on the wall, and it slid open. He stepped aside and held out his arm. Dennis took a deep breath before stepping over the threshold. The room was cozy. The stone walls were rust-colored, and the floor was polished stone covered in intricately woven rugs made of different materials. Aside from the large bed, there was a couch covered in pillows and a couple of chairs. Across the room was an open door, leading to an adjoining bathroom.
“I want to officially welcome you to Noglion, Dennis.”
Spinning around, Dennis faced the male.
“My name is Gogrek Vemm.” The large male stepped into the room, and the door closed behind him. Gogrek strode over to the couch and took a seat. “Please,” he said, holding out his hand to the empty chair across from him. “Take a seat.”
Dennis hesitated for only a brief moment. He was too tired to refuse the invitation. The heat and the walk had utterly drained him of energy. Strolling over to the sitting area, Dennis dropped down into one of the chairs.
“When you boarded our ship, your documents were sent from the Glecerian Ambassador, Rett T'Rul.”
Dennis nodded in understanding. He knew exactly what the Noglion male was talking about. Like the other humans leaving Earth, Dennis had to fill out paperwork when he volunteered to become a mate to an alien. He had to go through a series of tests−medical, psychological, and sexual personality−before he had been given approval. It was a long, tedious process.
“You’re a virgin,” Gogrek stated rather bluntly.
Dennis cleared his parched throat. “Yes.”
“You’ve never been with a male.”
“No,” he confirmed. “I’ve never been with a male before.”
“On Noglion, a male’s virginity is very special.”
Dennis had to admit that he was surprised by the news. On Earth, a man’s virginity wasn’t that important.
“We have decided that the arena isn’t the best place for you. Since you are a virgin, you won’t be publically claimed.”
Publically claimed. Dennis wasn’t sure what to think. Since being transferred to the Noglion starship, Dennis had been overwhelmed. But this new piece of information was surprising.
Dennis thought about Eric. What was happening to him? Was the other human going to be claimed in public?
“There will still be a contest for you. Any unmated male who believes that he is worthy of being your mate will fight for you. The outcome of the battle will determine which male will claim you. And the winner will be brought here to meet you in private.”
Again, Dennis nodded.
On Glecerus, the humans were auctioned off to the highest bidder. And on Sweshan, a human couldn’t be claimed unless he was pregnant. So, it wasn’t a big surprise that the Noglions fought in order to claim their mates.
“You should also know that the males here on Noglion share a mate with the other unmated males in their household. So, you’ll belong to them all.”
Dennis sucked in a sharp breath. The idea that he might have more than one mate was shocking. Then again, Dennis didn’t know anything about Noglion or their customs and traditions.
Gogrek rose to his feet in one smooth motion. He walked over to a rectangular table that sat against the wall and picked up a tray with a pitcher and two glasses. Gogrek walked back to the sitting area and placed the tray on the coffee table in front of Dennis. He took a seat once again, leaned forward, and picked up the pitcher. Gogrek poured out the liquid, filling each glass.
“What is that?” Dennis asked.
“Chilled mead laced with honey and some special herbs.”
Dennis arched a brow. “What kind of herbs?”
“The herbs are a mild aphrodisiac,” Gogrek said honestly. “It will help with the claiming.”
“Is it going to be that bad?” Did he really need an aphrodisiac before mating with a Noglion male?
Gogrek chuckled, as if Dennis’s question was silly. “It’s just going to relax you, loosen your muscles, and make it easier.”
Dennis sighed. He’d been through so much in such a short period of time, and in truth, Dennis wasn’t sure he could trust Gogrek.
“I know this must be difficult for you.” When Dennis nodded in agreement, Gogrek continued. “But you did volunteer to leave Earth to find a mate, right?”
“Yes,” he said simply.
“You don’t need to be scared. None of the males here on Noglion would hurt you or do anything without your consent. Right now, just have a drink and, then, take a bath. Try to relax. You’ll be meeting your mate soon.”
Reluctantly, Dennis nodded. This was his home now. Dennis needed to start trusting the males here on Noglion. Otherwise, the transition into his new life would be difficult.
Dennis picked up a glass from the tray. He took a sip, tasting the beverage. The ice-cold mixture hit his tongue and slid down his parched throat. Dennis moaned in delight. It was exactly what he needed. He finished the drink in two big gulps. When the glass was empty, Dennis placed the cup back on the tray.
“There’s a bath waiting for you,” Gogrek reminded him.
Dennis rose to his feet. A bath sounded heavenly. Without another word, Dennis walked toward the adjoining room. He couldn’t believe he was going to take a bath in a full tub of water. On Earth, water was in short supply. It was a luxury he’d never been afforded.
“The water has a cleaning agent in it,” Gogrek told him. “You won’t need any soap.”
“Okay,” Dennis said.
Dennis stepped into the bathroom and stopped. He stared at the bathtub in awe. The tub was below ground, carved out of the floor, and it was the size of a small pool. White, cloudy-colored water
poured out from an opening on the wall like a waterfall. Dennis automatically started stripping off his clothes. He dropped the filthy articles to the floor and kicked them aside. Stepping into the water, Dennis walked down the stairs.
As Dennis waded through the water, he rubbed his hands together in excitement as he walked over to the waterfall. He leaned his head back and closed his eyes. Dennis ran his hands through his hair and over his body, removing all the dirt, grime, and sweat. He groaned. It felt amazing.
He stood there for a while, relaxing under the heavy pressure. When he stepped out from beneath the waterfall, Dennis shook out his hair. He strode over to the bench and sat down. The water rose up, covering his shoulders. Closing his eyes, Dennis leaned his head back against the rim of the bathing pool. He sat there, relaxing in the water until his fingers and toes shriveled up like old prunes. Climbing out of the tub, Dennis grabbed a towel from a nearby shelf and dried off.
He looked around for something to wear, but there weren’t any clothes, and he wasn’t going to put on the filthy clothing he’d worn. So, Dennis wrapped the soft material around his waist and cinched it at his hip. He wasn’t really comfortable walking around in only a towel, but it didn’t seem as though he had a choice. Walking out of the bathroom, Dennis rejoined Gogrek in the sitting area.
Conscious of his nudity, Dennis took a seat across from the male and adjusted the towel, making sure he was covered. “Thank you,” he sighed. “I really needed that.”
Gogrek smiled, his yellow eyes moving up and down Dennis’s body as if inspecting him. “You’re beautiful.”
Chapter Two
Dennis wasn’t really sure how to respond to Gogrek’s compliment. It was strange. Normally, Dennis would feel a bit self-conscious and uncomfortable, but right now, he actually liked the way Gogrek was looking at him. The male’s intense yellow gaze devoured him. Dennis felt a surge of excitement rush through his veins, and his heart fluttered in response.
