“We should start thinking about what we’re going to do,” I said softly.
“What do you mean exactly?” Jay asked.
“I mean, we should think about where we’re going to stay and how we’re going to go about gathering supplies,” I said looking down at my fingers as they twisted together. “Maybe we should think about going back to your brother’s house.”
Blake looked up. He’d been in the same position for so long I thought he had fallen asleep.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Blake asked. “We’ve come this far, we’re going to keep going. It’s what Whitney would have wanted. It was what Dax would have wanted.”
There was a sourness to his words that made me take a step back. I looked down at my wet shoes.
“I don’t want anything else to happen,” I said softly.
“Shit is going to happen no matter where we are,” Blake said. “We’re going to make it to that base. If your sister is alive, we’re going to find her. At that point, we can talk about what we’re going to do.”
Blake’s sharp words silenced me. Even though it felt impossible and life-threatening, he was right. We didn’t come this far to just give up.
When the sun came up, the rain turned into a drizzle and before noon, it stopped. We’d taken turns resting but I didn’t get more than an hour of sleep.
The cabin was empty and so were our stomachs. All we had was the knife and the warm sunlight.
Blake stood in front of the door with his arms crossed. He looked at us, successfully hiding the sadness I knew he was feeling.
“It’s not going to be fun walking out there but we need to get a move on. We’re going to need to find a vehicle, food, and water,” Blake said. “It’s important to stay together and keep your eyes peeled for sick.”
I nodded and grabbed Maddie’s hand. She didn’t look away from Blake but she squeezed my hand.
“We’re going to do this,” Blake said reassuringly. He hesitated for a long moment before turning to look out the window. “Ready?”
“Ready,” we all said in the same emotionless voice.
Blake opened the door and we stepped out onto the soggy ground. The sun warmed my chilled skin.
There was a damp, minty scent in the air. The dark clouds were gone and big, white fluffy clouds drifted across the light-blue sky.
Walking away from the cabin was difficult. I couldn’t shake the feeling that we were forgetting something behind.
Blake had his blade and I had the medicine so I knew we didn't forget anything. The feeling was because we were leaving without Whitney.
Losing her had only reminded me that we’d also lost Dax. Blake was right, we had to keep going. We had to do it for Dax and Whitney.
I sucked in a breath and let it fill my lungs. We were going to make it to the base. No matter what.
The option to fail didn’t exist. It wouldn’t be much longer. We would do it. We would get to that base. I couldn’t let anything get in my way.
Nothing was going to stop me. Nothing.
