“They hurt people,” Theo says.
Jaden leans into my ear. “They’re naughty.”
He steps back as I shake my head and look back over the field. They’re not wrong there, but… “Mummy’s never made them die with her mind before.”
“Because you haven't tried.”
I return my attention to Raeni. “Can you not make them die?”
She shakes her head. “Not this much. That's why we're helping you.”
“We can make you better mummy,” Theo says. “We’re good helpers.”
I smile as I kiss his forehead. “I know you are, baby, but—
“We make you the best.”
I turn to see Jaden fist-pumping the air. “Thank you, sweetheart.”
“Come on, Mummy,” Raeni says. “Try.”
This is the craziest thing they’ve done thus far, but if I know one thing more than anything, it’s that my kids, mostly, know what they’re doing.
I sigh. “Alright.”
I turn on my knees to sense each of the zombies over there, but I also feel Jaden, Theo, and Raeni’s minds almost merge into mine. My heart races from the alien feeling.
This is really…
“We’re ready, mummy,” Jaden says.
“Just say the word, Mummy,” Raeni urges.
“Okay.” I take a deep breath as my heart races out of control.
What if they do all die?
I think I might, from shock.
“Mummy!”
I sense Theo’s frustration, so I hurry to do what they’ve asked me to.
‘Die.’
‘Well done, mummy,’ I hear Raeni say, and then we watch the zombies across the field begin to fall like dominoes, until none of them are left standing.
I try to control them again, but I’m not able to.
They really are dead.
“My, God…”
