And “Into the White” specifically might be a clear winner for my affections out of all the episodes so far. As an author, it’s a strange type of magic as you watch your characters come alive. Beings that were nothing more than a name on a blank piece of paper have a history, a backstory, connections and thoughts and feelings and wants and desires (mostly the desire to avoid death, in this case). I see them as clearly as I see certain members of my family, and they tell the story they want to tell.
“Into the White” is the heart of how I originally saw this story. An exploration of the struggles of ordinary people met with extraordinary circumstances. When I dreamed this up, way back in 2016 in a little writers’ group in England, surrounded by eight of my peers, it was the storm that pulled me in. I love the extremes life throws at us, I love the polar opposites of the spectrum, and I love fixing the pieces of the jigsaw that show how ordinary, everyday folk can do amazing things. An author’s challenge is to find new ways to explain old material and cast their particular flavour onto their passages. I hope I’ve done that for you with this one. I believe I have.
The story is drawing to a close, now. The endgame is in sight, and I’m as interested as you to see where the final stretch of this story is heading.
After all, it’s truly anyone’s game at this point…
