Zay pushed back his chair and hooked an arm around her to pull her into his lap.
Burl was yanked onto his feet again. “You!” he screamed as he was being dragged away. “You! Doherty! This was you!”
Wearing a smile, she kissed her fingertips and blew him a kiss. “Bye, daddy!” she called, offering a finger wave as he was hauled into a waiting elevator.
The doors closed and just like that, he was gone.
A couple of other guys came from the hallway. McNeill and someone she didn’t know.
“Wow, that was…” McNeill looked her way. “You are the cherry on my shake.”
She frowned. “How dare you, Agent McNeill. I’m married.”
Zay tightened his half embrace. Just as she’d thought, he wasn’t wearing his sling. His hand was free in the sleeve of the hoodie. Assuming it had to be tired, she slid her palm under his and held his hand to her chest for support.
“I mean we got everything,” McNeill said.
Score and Doran were on their feet, approaching the fed who switched his focus to them.
“You didn’t wake me,” Whisper said to Zay.
“I wanted to keep you out of it. We told Burl Shyla was asleep too.”
“But she’s not, right? Score did get her out of here?” Zay nodded. “How long was he here?”
“Around an hour,” Zay said. “We covered a lot, updating Score on current operations. Burl didn’t hesitate to tell him everything. We were sorta struggling with how to segue into your father’s murder—”
“That’s what you get for benching me,” she said, mesmerized by the proximity of his mouth.
“You did good, Peanut. Perfect.”
“That’s right,” she said. “Now you know things have to change if we’re gonna start over.”
“Change?” he asked. “We’re starting over?”
“Yeah,” she said. “I think maybe we should date… You know, go out together, get to know each other.”
One side of his mouth rose. “We’re married, Peanut. Too late for takebacks now.”
Looping an arm around his neck, she pulled herself close to whisper on his mouth. “No takebacks. Just because I’m dating you doesn’t mean I’m on the market… and neither are you, husband.”
“I’m only yours?”
Whisper’s eyes closed as contentment washed through her. “Damn straight, McDade.”
They were never supposed to make it. At the time of their marriage, Whisper hadn’t realized they were being set up to fail. Whatever the motivations of their fathers, they’d found their own in each other. Whisper needed Zay’s certainty and he needed her heart. After all they’d endured together, she was definitely ready to hand it over… providing he gave up his in return.
Zay had confessed to loving her for years, so she had some catching up to do. Whisper didn’t mind being a little behind him. It was a great way to keep an eye on his fine ass, and keep him wondering about what she might do next.
