by Michele Hauf
“Friendship would have been good, but this is so much better, don’t you think?”
She approached the bed and he reached for her, the woman he loved, the woman who carried his child.
“Sweetheart, you have no idea how much better it’s going to be.”
Epilogue
Sam stared down at the tiny bundle of pink in Cleo’s arms, and realized he hadn’t known what love and happiness meant until now.
Watching Cleo give birth to his daughter was a life-altering experience. He’d been filled with so much love for the tiny, wrinkled, redheaded child that his heart had almost exploded with it.
“How are you feeling?” he asked, setting the bouquet of green and white roses on the bedside table.
“A little sore, but Sam, isn’t she wonderful?”
As if she understood they were talking about her, their daughter stretched and opened her eyes.
“They’re blue!”
Cleo chuckled. “My mother’s eyes were blue, and so are Jane’s, so don’t act so surprised.”
He smiled. “I know, but I was hoping she would have your golden ones.”
“She still might. Babies’ eyes often change. Where’s Dad? You did meet his flight, didn’t you?”
“I did. He and the gang are waiting none too patiently for me to let them in, but I wanted to spend a few seconds alone with you, Mrs. Mason. I got you something. He held up a jeweler’s box and opened it. Inside, nestled on a bed of deep blue velvet was a diamond pendant, with the letters C C M. “It stands for Catherine and Cleopatra Mason, the two women who hold my heart, now and forever.”
“It’s beautiful, Sam. I’ll treasure it, just as I’ll treasure you and her.”
He fastened it around her neck and kissed her softly, knowing he would never get enough of his wife, and recalling how close he’d come to losing her.
“So, are you ready to introduce Catherine Michele to the rest of the family?”
“I am.” She smiled. “I love you, Sam Mason.”
“And I love you. Now, before your father breaks down the door, I’d better let him in. He’s only recently forgiven me for Vegas. I don’t want to get on his bad side.”
She giggled. “Take him for a ride in the El Dorado, and all will be forgiven.”
“How do you think I got him here from the airport?” He winked.
Stepping away from the bed, he looked back at the loves of his life and sighed. He was the luckiest man in the world. Their relationship wasn’t just for the weekend, it was for life, and that was just the way he wanted it.
