The truth of his promise struck fear in every cell. The prop was fireproof but I certainly wasn’t. The giant angel was made to withstand fire; flames only flickered until the accelerant burned away and it was an awe-inspiring sight. But I now hung in place of that prop, doused in kerosene.
Fumes gagged me each time I drew a raspy breath and I calculated I had less than five minutes before I became a funeral pyre. Five minutes to review my life, to scan over the mistakes that led me to this situation. Five minutes to wonder how I could have been so blinded by the thought of fame to not recognize a psychopath.
The music rose to a crescendo, signaling the climax of the play. With a jerk, the chains started lowering me. My heart thundered and my gaze dropped, meeting his for a brief moment.
Malice lived there, along with the underlying wonder of a pyromaniac.
I tried to scream, to give an indication that the prop was alive but my voice was nothing but a hoarse breath.
The lighter sparked on cue and hungry flames licked the air under me, igniting and crawling up my body. The chains lowered the flaming angel into view and all the actors on stage took a knee, averting their gaze as the play instructed. The audience gasped and I had a brief moment of ecstasy when all eyes were locked on my magnificent glowing form. For a brief moment, I experienced fame.
Then the flames ate through the layer of kerosene, devouring my skin, and I finally found my voice. My scream echoed and the cast snapped their gazes to me, their faces filled with the same horror reflected on each member of the audience.
Only his face held something other than horror or a hand covering his mouth in shock. His held a slight smile, one born of fascination and satisfaction.
Anger spread as fast as the flames and I threw my head back, bellowing my pain and frustration into the rafters, letting the heat devour my soul.
But I wouldn’t be alone in my journey to hell.
The bucket of kerosene tipped, spilling directly over him, dousing him in a flaming shower. My last coherent thought as his burning form pin-wheeled on stage catching the curtains and wood flooring on fire was...karma is a bitch.
